Chapter 635
“But I can’t trust that.’

Those five words cut into John. They cut into Sierra too, like some kind of double-edged sword.
They had always trusted and understood each other, but at that moment, a crack formed in their close relationship.
“Before all this happened, I used to feel lucky all the time.” Sierra meant every word. “You were guarded and calculating with everyone else, but you were truly good to me. I never thought all your schemes and careful planning would one day be used on
me.”
“I did use them,” John admitted.
“What?” Sierra blinked.
“From the first time I saw you again after we grew up, I was already using every/thethod I could to bring you back home and marry you,” John said.
“That was different.” Sierra knew the difference. “I’m talking about the kind that hurt me.”
“There was that too,” John said.
Sierra looked at him, confused.
When?
“Back when we weren’t together yet, several people wanted to pursue you. I couldn’t stand them, so I had Robin give them a few things to work with.” John told her about the ugly things he had done. “I never gave you the chance to choose them.”
People always said that if you loved someone, you should give her the chance to choose. Let her make the best choice. Let her choose the person she thought suited her best.
But he had already chosen her.
“I know.” Sierra had always thought that was part of their unspoken understanding.
Now it was John’s turn to be surprised.
Sierra told him what she had thought back then. “I didn’t need them at all I had already made the choice I thought was best
from the very start.”
“Sierra…” John’s heart was aching and warmed up at the same time. It kept on swinging back and forth.
୮
“I don’t regret the past.” The calmer Sierra sounded, the more broken John’s heart became. “But I’ll also stand by the new choices I’ve made. I’ve always lived my life my own way.”
With those words, John knew she was forcing him to let go, because what he had done had terrified her.
“I also hope you can choose a new path and stop holding so tightly to things that only hurt you and others.” Sierra turned the subject back to him. “As long as your conscience is clear, you don’t have to adhere so hard to your promises.”
John said nothing, and the air between them turned heavy.
After a long time, he finally asked, “Then can we still be friends?”
“No. Let’s just be strangers after the divorce.” Sierra saw things clearly, and she didn’t beat around the bush as well. “That kind of relationship doesn’t suit us. You’ll only find it harder and harder to let go, and I’ll only end up burdened by it.”
“Alright,” John said with a nod.
Sierra responded with a nod as well.
“thank you,” John said.

Sierra looked at film, confused. Thank her for what? She could not figure it out, but she did not dwell on it. She took out her phone and checked the time.
At the same time, Nathan was checking the time too. Ever since John and his daughter left ofre after the other, he had been glancing at his phone every few seconds. In a little over ten minutes, he had checked it no fewer than a hundred times.
“Anna.” After looking around and still not seeing either of them, he started criticizing John. “Sierra and John have been gone for so long. Do you think something happened?”
Anna did not even want to speak to him. She might not trust other people, but she still trusted john. He had done some ridiculous things, but he had never crossed the line after the divorce.
“Robin’s gone too. Shouldn’t we go look for them?” Nathan asked.
By then, a whole drama had already played out in his head. Every scene had John pestering his daughter and trying to talk her into remarrying hìm.
Anna ignored him and walked over to Tommy and Lucy.
Sierra had been gone for so long that if she really had something to discuss with John, she would have had someone pass a message to Tommy.
“Grandma!” Tommy lit up when he saw her. He also passed along the message Kenneth had given him. “Moramy and Daddy had something to talk about. They said they’ll come find us later.
