John was satisfied with Tony's ability to read the room and left without him having to order it. He then stood next to Sierra and asked about her work as they took a walk and chatted. "Is the project going well?"
"It is," Sierra said.
"Tell me anytime if there's anything you need help with," John offered.
Sierra stopped, and John did so as well.
"There's something I've always wanted to ask you," she said.
"Go ahead." John nodded.
Her voice was calm, but her eyes were serious. "In your eyes, am I always someone you have to take care of? Someone who can't survive on her own?"
"No," John said.
"Is that always the case? Or do you only think that now?" Sierra asked again.
It wasn't that she needed an answer, but she would always feel something was left unresolved if she didn't get an answer. Whenever she thought about it late at night, it would upset her.
"That has always been the case. I know you're a very capable woman," John said sincerely.
Sierra knew he was lying.
When she thought about it, the divorce hadn't been such a bad thing. If Pamela had never happened, she might still be John's stay-at-home wife. He might have kept loving her the way he had before for the next five or ten years, but what about after that…?
He would go to work every day, and she would stay home every day. They would have less and less in common. One day, when his feelings for her finally faded, he would take back all his love and special treatment.
He would not cheat, because he was someone who was obsessed with promises. Instead, there would be no love left between them.
They would go from talking about everything to having nothing to say. They would become optional to each other instead of being the only ones for each other.
They would stop caring for one another, becoming something that mattered little.
From saying "I love you," to "I'm busy."
Sierra no longer felt much at this point.
"That was because that promise carries the weight of a person's life." John told her the truth for the first time. "I could do anything for you. I could protect you from anything, even taking a bullet for you, but this was something I owed him."
If he had not gone abroad, Albion would not have died.
If he had not helped Danny grow Henderson Group and plan the company's operations, Danny would not have gained that much power.
In the end, he had a hand in Albion's death.
"I promise you, I won't give you up for any reason from now on." John wanted to reassure her first whether she was willing to be with him or not. "You come before everything."
The words didn't make Sierra happy.
She knew John could do what he said, but what she needed was not a machine that only followed orders and never learned how to adapt.
