Sierra’s mood had never been better after she calculated the cost quietly in her mind. She knew she was under a lot of pressure and she was exhausted, but she was reaching the light at the end of the tunnel.
“I’ll keep a close eye on things here at the hospital,” Dr. Smith said, pushing down his own feelings and giving her the strongest reassurance he could as a doctor. “As for you, focus on your work.”
“Thank you,” Sierra said.
Seeing that there was nothing else to discuss, Sierra stood to go back to the ward.
Her hand had just grabbed the door handle when Dr. Smith looked up and called out, “Ms. Bell.”
She turned. “Yes?”
Her features were delicate, her gaze clear and steady. The softness she once carried was gone, replaced by strength and determination.
It was as if she had become a different person in just a few days.
Noticing him looking at her, Sierra let go of the handle. “What is it?”
“Nothing,” Dr. Smith said. He thought she was doing great. “I just wanted to say, if you get too busy to come by, let me know. I’ll make time to check on your mother.”
“Alright. Thank you,” Sierra replied, her tone sincere.
Sierra smiled at him, then opened the door and walked out. She walked fast and sure, just how she was feeling.
Back in the ward, she sat beside Anna’s bed.
Sierra lifted her mother’s hand to her cheek and looked at the woman with eyes full of tenderness and reliance.
She talked to her mother, Anna Bell, for a long time.
She told Anna everything that had happened lately, shared her plans for the future, and how much she missed Anna. Every word was picked up clearly by John, who was still watching the footage on his computer.
The more he listened, the colder his expression became, and the hand at his side slowly tightened.
In all the futures Sierra imagined, Tommy and Anna were a constant, but he wasn’t there.
Kenneth shut the laptop when he felt the change in his mood. “Your mother–in–law’s surgery went well. You’re not going down to see her?”
“Where’s Lucas?” John’s eyes were as dark as ink.
“Washing glasses at the bar,” Kenneth answered, not sure why he was asking that.
“In a couple of days, let him ‘accidentally‘ find out where Sierra lives,” John said as he picked up his phone, his fingers tightening slightly. “Don’t give him the building or apartment number, just the neighborhood.”
Kenneth blinked. He was completely baffled. “What for?”
“The surgery went well. As Anna’s husband, he has the right to know,” John said, his voice flat, giving nothing away. “Sierra should tell him.”
“Is that really the reason?” Kenneth asked.

John didn’t respond as he simply stood up and walked out.

Kenneth could not shake the feeling that something was off, but he couldn’t really find a problem with what he said.
Sierra knew nothing about this.
She stayed with her mother in the ward for a long time. Only when the sky outside had darkened did she say goodbye to the doctors and head for John’s residence.
Tommy’s classes had finished before the surgery did.
Worried that something might come up during the operation and the hospital might need her, Sierra had spoken in advance with Mr. Rogers and Tommy’s teachers, asking them to send Tommy back to John’s place after school. She would pick him up once everything at the hospital was settled.
By the time she arrived, the timing was just right.
She called Tommy, and he came running out with his backpack.
