Chapter 8
“You go rest in the room. I have to take this call,” John replied, his voice full of warmth and tenderness.
When Sierra heard those words, it felt like John had personally stabbed her straight through the heart.
When she first saw the news about him and Pamela, it hurt, but she still held onto a bit of hope. Maybe it was all just some misunderstanding.
But now, after she heard their voices herself, the pain was worse than any stabbing. The heaviness in her chest was suffocating.
“What is it?” John’s voice on the phone was colder and more distant than before, like she was just some irrelevant stranger he could dismiss at will.
Sierra still wanted answers. “What are you two doing?”
“You called just to ask that?” John shot back, refusing to give her even a straight answer.
Sierra felt completely let down. She forced herself to stay calm and didn’t waste any more words. “Where’s my suitcase? Give it back.”
John’s response was to hang up the phone.
Sierra called again.
She had to get her documents back. The longer he had them, the greater the chance of something troublesome arising.
But this time, John didn’t pick up.
Pamela watched as Sierra’s name kept flashing on his phone. To test the waters, she asked, “Aren’t you going to answer?”
“There’s a time and place for everything. I’ll watch TV with you first,” John replied, letting the phone ring on the table.
Pamela wrapped herself around his arm, wearing only a nightdress. She looked sexy and seductive. “I don’t want to watch TV. I want to do something else.”
She pressed closer. John glanced down, and he could see everything she was showing off.
“Behave,” John stopped her, completely unaffected by her actions. “Your job right now is to take care of your health.”
“Is it because you don’t like me?” Pamela pouted, sounding hurt.
John tried to reassure her. “That’s not it.”
“Then why would you rather kiss Sierra than touch me at all?” she asked.
“That was just an act for Tommy,” John replied, gently moving her hand off his arm, not giving anything away. “You don’t have to worry about whether you matter less than Sierra. You’re the most important one.”
Pamela hugged him, her heart warmed, though she couldn’t shake a thread of unease. She knew her lies would be uncovered sooner or later.
If John ever learned that it was Sierra and not her who had saved him as a child, everything she had now would vanish. She would be left with nothing.
An hour later, Sierra finally got a message from John. It was just a few words:
“Come get it yourself.”
With it was the location of Lakeside Villa.
Sierra didn’t hesitate. She told Tommy she needed to run an errand, then headed straight over.

When she arrived, the villa was empty, the doors locked, and there was no sound from inside.
She called John. No answer.
