Chapter 81

Pamela suddenly felt a desperate need for a clear answer.

“John.”

“Speak,” John said, looking at her.

“After you and Sierra finalize the divorce, will you marry me?” Pamela asked.

Her heart was pounding, not from excitement, but from the unease and fear of the answer she didn’t want to get.

John’s usually composed features grew heavier. He clearly hadn’t expected that question.

“I know it’s a little abrupt,” Pamela said before he could respond, not wanting the silence to turn awkward, “but I just wanted to know in advance, so I can be mentally prepared.”

“I gave you my answer at the very beginning,” John said directly. “The result won’t change because of anything that happens in between.”

Pamela forced a smile. “I see.”

John simply hummed with a nod.

“Will you marry someone else, then?” Pamela tested carefully.

John’s unreadable gaze fell on her. He knew exactly what she was thinking and why she was asking, but that didn’t mean he would give her the answer she wanted.

Pamela waited a long time and still didn’t hear a reply. She understood then that he would never marry her.

“I’m just worried that if you do marry someone else one day, she might not accept me,” she said quickly, finding a reasonable excuse. “That might be quite troublesome.”

“Sierra is the one and only Mrs. Henderson,” John said.

She would always be the one listed as his spouse, irrespective of her wishes.

“That’s good,” Pamela said.

It felt like something had stabbed her, but she still had to pretend it didn’t hurt at all.

“If you regret your choices earlier, you can still change them,” John added.

He had noticed the shift in her mood, but that was one of the things he had been clear about from the start. He couldn’t give what he wouldn’t.

“I’ll respect your decision.”

“It’s fine,” Pamela rejected immediately. “This is fine.”

John lifted a hand and adjusted the shawl around her shoulders. They stayed together a while longer. After comforting her, he left, using work as an excuse.

When Sierra arrived at the hospital, it was almost noon. She went to the ward first to check on Anna and talked to her for a long time.

Worried about Anna’s condition, Sierra went to speak with the doctor again. Fortunately, all of Anna’s indicators were normal. After lunch, Dr. Smith came into the ward. Seeing that Sierra was still there, he spoke to her.

“Don’t worry. Your mother is very stable. If recovery goes fast, she’ll wake up within two weeks. Two months at most if things go slowly. Focus on your work.”

“I don’t really have anything urgent right now,” Sierra said. She still wanted to stay and talk with her mother a bit more.

If a miracle happened and her mother woke up early, then her rock would be back.

Dr. Smith didn’t push her. He only reassured her that everything on the medical side was under control and that she should put her energy into her career.

Sierra said yes to all that.

Very soon, Wednesday arrived.
