Chapter 87

Sierra had considered that this might all be a setup, but John hadn’t approached her once the entire day. He hadn’t even spared her a second look, as if she were just another ordinary employee at Origin Games.
It made no sense for him to leave her alone at work only to stir things up for her at a company dinner.
“I’ll come get you after I pick up Tommy,” Nicholas said, uneasy about her going in alone. “Until then, find an excuse to stall and stay outside.”
Sierra was about to answer when the manager walked over.
“Sierra, why are you still out here?”
“My friend called,” Sierra said quickly, lifting her phone as a shield. “It’s something urgent.”
“No matter how urgent it is, it can’t be more important than the job you just landed,” the manager replied, smiling lightly but sounding entirely serious. “The senior members from the company will arrive any minute now. As a newcomer, you can’t keep them waiting, right?”
Sierra’s hand tightened around her phone.
Back when she had been with John, he always took her in last, and no one would complain. She had never had to think about etiquette, about whether she would offend someone, or about whether anyone was displeased.
Now, just as the manager said, she was only a junior employee. Being fired would be one thing, but if people chose to harass her and make work life difficult, that would be far worse.
She nodded her head slightly. “I’ll go in now.”
The manager nodded and ushered her inside.
Nicholas had heard all of this through his phone on speaker via the car’s Bluetooth. As he drove, he said, “Don’t listen to him. Just wait for me.”
“Things aren’t the same anymore. I’m going in,” Sierra said. She didn’t want obstacles in her path from anyone other than John. “Let me know when you get here. If something happens, I’ll pretend I’m not feeling well, and you can come up for me.”
However, Nicholas was still worried.
Sierra cut him off with a single sentence. “That’s it, I’m hanging up.”
She put her phone away and walked toward the private room the manager had mentioned.
When she entered, only the manager Ivan Taylor was there. He saw she was uncomfortable, so he started a conversation.”
Sierra.”
“Yes?” she answered.
Ivan asked in a firm tone, “Are you close with our boss, Morgan Snyder?”
