Chapter 96
Even though Sierra was incredibly drunk and barely aware, she tucked the blanket over Tommy despite almost not knowing who she was anymore.
John’s gaze softened.
Tommy’s eyes were wide open. “I’ll come out after Mom is fully asleep.”
“Alright,” John said.
He tucked the blanket in around the two of them, looked at them for a moment longer, then turned off the light before leaving
the room.
Sitting on the living room couch, he looked at this cramped space. The size of the living room was barely larger than their bathroom at home. Every corner was crammed full of everyday objects.
He couldn’t understand why Sierra insisted on divorcing him and moving out here to suffer.
Small. Narrow. No housekeeping. No help.
While he was thinking about it, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He thought it would be Pamela, but the screen showed Kenneth’s name instead. He picked up the call.
“What is it?”
“I heard you had drinks with your wife tonight,” Kenneth said, as nosy as ever.
John didn’t respond. He was not surprised Kenneth found out about it already.
“Where are you now?” Kenneth asked.
“Get to the point,” John said.
“Relax. I’m just asking a question,” Kenneth said. He was clearly just bored and fishing for gossip. “Also, let me remind you not to be so brazen. Don’t take advantage of her while she’s drunk.”
John moved the phone away, ready to hang up. However low he might fall, he wasn’t going to touch Sierra in that state.
“Wait!” Kenneth suddenly raised his voice, as if he knew John was about to end the call.
“Speak,” John said.
“I finished digging through Nicholas’s life from childhood onward,” Kenneth said. That was clearly why he had really called.‘ But I still can’t figure out why Sierra never suspects he likes her.”
John was certain there was a problem. “Keep looking.”
“Maybe we’re just reading it wrong,” Kenneth said. “Maybe he only looks like he likes her and actually doesn’t.”
If Nicholas really had feelings for her, there was no reason that not one friend, roommate, or classmate from their shared past noticed it. No one could hide their intentions that well.
“He likes Sierra,” John said, his tone flat but absolute. Sometimes, a simple look says it all for men. On that point, he was completely sure.
“I’ve checked everything. Check it ten more times and it won’t make any difference,” Kenneth said honestly. “Ask Holly. She’s close to him. Maybe she knows.”
“You ask,” John said.
“I’m not your employee,” Kenneth shot back.

“When you bid against the Lane family in a tender next time, I’ll help you win it,” John replied.
Kenneth answered at once. “Deal.”
There was almost nothing that could not be settled as long as the rewards were substantial enough.
After the call, Tommy slipped out of the bedroom. He closed the door quietly and stealthily walked over and sat down beside John on the couch.
Father and son faced each other at close range.
