Chapter 10
Raven’s POV
The rogues don’t hesitate. I feel relatively certain we have the advantage, given that it was four against six and we had not only an Alpha on our side but a Beta as well. The rogues attack, diving themselves amongst us all. Twojgo for Hades, another two go for Jackson, while one aims straight for Marissa, and the last one, sensing was almost human runs directly towards me. I was the weakest link in the chain after all. I was actually surprised more of the rogues hadn’t attempted to come after me, but maybe ridding themselves of the Alpha and Beta first was their objective. I wasn’t about to complain or scream for help. I couldn’t distract the others from their fighting.
I hear Hades growl as he fights, and I see Jackson easily dispatch one of the rogues before wrestling with his other opponent. My hand delves into my pocket and withdraws the knife, bringing it up as the rogue tackles me to the ground. I bring my arms up, preventing the rogue from clamping his jaws down, wrestling and kicking. As he rears back, my hand slices across his chest, and he scrambles backwards, allowing me to get back onto my feet. He circles me, his expression calculating. I put one foot back in a defensive position and wait. He lunges. I slash, bringing my arm back and forth as I dance backwards. He snarls and jumps. I quickly roll over to the side and stand back up, turning. He sides slams me, sending me flying into the nearest tree. I grunt, feeling the pain as my bruises and marks are still healing. I want to pass out, but instead I grit my teeth, the wolf gives me a sickening grin as I pick myself up.
A howl from behind me as Marissa gets hurt. I can’t spare a glance at her. All my focus is on my own survival as the rogue attempts to tackle me once more. I jump and land on his back, stabbing the knife into him over and over again as blood spurts all over my clothes and face. He howls, his head flinging back and forth as he tries to grab at me, his body jolting upwards as he tries to buck me off. I fall forward and plunge the knife into his neck, using my entire strength to force it in. The rogues’ eyes widen. I push harder. I’m desperate. He makes a gurgling sound. His body falls with a heavy crash to the ground, almost crushing me. I roll off of him and lean against his back, breathing heavily and feeling overexerted. Rogues were a lot tougher than human opponents. I would have to train harder to build up my strength.
Hades has managed to kill both of the rogues attacking him. He turns his attention to Marissa who is running and zigzagging through the trees while she tries to outrun the rogue attacking her. He leaps onto the rogue’s back and then clamps his jaw down hard, tearing into the rogue’s neck and killing him instantly. Jackson sends his rogue flying into a tree, the tree swaying dangerously from the impact. The rogue yelps and stands up awkwardly, favouring his back leg. I get to my feet, drawing air into my lungs. The rogue senses defeat and turns in the opposite direction, making a run at me. Fuck. I barely have time to pull out the knife, both hands tugging at it and turn before the rogue knocks me over. As Jackson runs, trying to save me, I slice into the rogue’s stomach, ripping it apart, its guts starting to fall out as he whimpers and falls sideways. His legs scrabble and then still. I lie there panting. So close. I almost died. I sit upright, feeling shaky. The rogue is dead. The forest floor is littered with their bodies. I look like a character from a horror movie. My entire body is drenched in blood. Jackson turns back into a human body and rushes forward, grasping my arm and hoisting me to my feet as I sway back and forth, my legs feeling as though they are about to give out at any moment.
“Shit, Raven, are you alright?” he runs his hands over me, checking for injuries.
I tiredly bat his hand away. “The blood’s not mine,” I choke out.
He exhales in relief. Hades, now human, and Marissa too, stand close by. Hades moves closer, his own eyes assessing the condition I’m in. Jackson immediately turns on Marissa. “I knew this would happen,” he explodes,” Raven managed to take two out and she’s an anomaly, you’re a white wolf,” he said, annoyed, “and you couldn’t even defeat one for fuck sake!”
He’s beyond furious. Hades looks at Marissa with a calculated expression. It’s impossible to know what he’s thinking about. I begin to feel shaky and lightheaded.
