Chapter 14
She gently rubs my back. “I want you to live,” she told me, wiping my tears away and studying me solemnly. “I want you to have the will to want to survive.”
“Why?” my voice is bitter, “so that I can continue to suffer. This tattoo won’t come off. My life is over,” I said, pointing at it. “Ending it, all would simply be easier.”
“Easier, yes,” she said agreeably, nodding, “but don’t you want to know what it feels like to be loved? Don’t you want to know what It’s like to have a place to call home and fit in? To find your people? To have children?”
I sniffle. “I want all of those things, but it isn’t possible. My mother and sister are never going to let me go. All those things,” I admitted in a choked whisper, “are nothing more than a dream that I can never hope to become reality.”
“What if you could?” she asked me, standing back up and viewing me with an inscrutabla gaze, “what if you had the opportunity to change your own fate?”
“How?” My voice is barely a whisper now.
Tears continue to trickle down my cheeks, making my face splotchy. She holds my face between her hands. ” Anything you want, anything you dream about, is in your hands as long as you have the strength to take it. The time to take back what belongs to you, what should have been given to you is now.”
“What are you saying?” I demanded, hoarsely, not quite following.
“I’m saying that you have to become what’s been lurking in your heart all this time. Stop hesitating. Stop concerning yourself with others. It’s time to make yourself a priority, Raven. It’s time for you to take revenge. It’s time for you to make things right.”
“I can’t,” I said woodenly, “if I so much as lift a hand against Marissa or try to escape this tattoo will shock me.”
