Chapter 10
The flight lasted 15 hours.
I was still feeling a little dazed when the plane touched down in the airport, and I took my first step onto foreign soil it turned out that I only needed 15 hours to leave Stefano behind.
With Grandpa’s subordinates leading the way, I walked over to the car that was here to pick me up.
I was a few steps away when a slender hand with the Scapuzzi family’s crest tattooed on it opened the door from inside.
A handsome man with sharp eyes sat inside the car. I greeted him when we made eye contact.
“Uncle Marco.”
I never would have guessed that Marco Scapuzzi would be the one to pick me up. He was Grandpa’s adopted son, and he was also my playmate when I was growing up.
When Dad kicked me out of the family, Marco had been traveling abroad looking for a famous doctor for Grandpa. When he rushed back to the country after receiving the news, I had already fallen in love with Stefano.
Marco had tried to talk me out of marrying Stefano, claiming that he was a bad man, but I was already in too deep at that time. We didn’t see each other again after I decided to cut my ties with the family and marry Stefano.
It was why I couldn’t help but feel a little awkward now that I was meeting him face-to-face again.
Fortunately, Marco didn’t bring up my failed relationship. He just asked me about how I had been recently, as he always did. He also offered me my favorite focaccia.
The nervousness in my heart dissipated greatly. After I felt a little more relaxed, I chatted with him like we did in the past.
The driver drove the car at breakneck speeds, and it didn’t take long before I was face-to-face with Grandpa.
Grandpa had always been a strong, old man in my memories. And yet, he was hooked up to a ventilator and lying weakly on the bed at that moment.
“You’re back, Gina,” Grandpa said as he reached out a thin hand to me, using all his strength to touch me.
I couldn’t stop my tears from falling and splattering on the bed.
“I’m sorry, Grandpa. I’m late,” I said, feeling choked up as I leaned against his embrace.
Grandpa patted my head affectionately and said, “You’ll always be my treasure, no matter how late you are. And no treasure of mine needs to suffer any hardship.”
We chatted for a long time while Grandpa held my hand. I felt like I had returned to being a child, lying across his knees as I spoke cutely to him.
I only reluctantly left when Grandpa became exhausted and needed to rest. But before I left, Grandpa took Marco’s and my hand and made him promise to take care of me forever.
Feeling awkward, I tried to retract my hand. I didn’t expect Marco to make his promise even faster than I could react.
Marco sank to one knee in front of me and stared at me seriously, saying, “I swear I’ll always be by Gina’s side. I’ll never let her suffer any hardship ever again.”
His words set Grandpa at ease as he lay down on the bed again.
Meanwhile, I felt too awkward to even meet Marco’s eyes. I hurried out of the house with Marco trailing after me leisurely. He didn’t say anything.
He only spoke when we got back into the car, saying, “The Scapuzzi family has expanded its business quite a lot here over the years. You’ll help with keeping things running smoothly starting tomorrow.”
“Huh?” I looked at him in surprise.
