Sophia brought Emily with her to Foster Group today. As they reached the entrance, Sophia paused, staring up at the building.
Five years ago, the first time she came here, she was holding divorce papers. She never thought she’d ever walk through these doors again.
For a moment, her mind drifted back to that day, and everything felt strangely distant.
Emily gently stepped up beside her and asked in a soft voice, “Ms. Roth, are you okay?” pulling Sophia out of her thoughts.
Sophia smiled softly and shook her head. “I’m fine. Let’s head inside.”
Gordon was already waiting for them in the lobby.
“Good morning, Ms. Roth,” he greeted.
“Good morning, Gordon,” Sophia replied.
“The meeting’s about to start. Easton’s already waiting for you in the conference room,” Gordon said, respectfully ushering Sophia and the Crestview Group team toward the meeting room.
The first phase of the Southern Development Zone project was going off without a hitch, and the government was all praise for their green initiatives. In Easton’s mind, Sophia was a total ace. No wonder she’s the design director at Rothea Designs.
Today’s meeting focused on all the details about kicking off the construction. Whenever there were questions, Sophia handled them with clear, confident explanations for the team.
After the morning meeting, Foster Group was hosting a business lunch. Easton had already brought it up, so there was no polite way for Sophia to refuse.
Emily and Gordon couldn’t help but speculate. Even with all the work piling up in the meeting, their thoughts kept wandering to Easton and Sophia.
But as the morning meeting and lunch went by, Emily started to wonder if Easton really didn’t stand a chance anymore.
She noticed Easton kept looking Sophia’s way, but Sophia didn’t spare him a single glance.
Easton took his usual spot at the head of the table, stone-faced as ever. No one could ever guess what he was thinking.
Everyone’s attention naturally shifted to Sophia.
Everyone was thinking the same thing. ‘Seriously, how could Easton ever let a woman as stunning as Ms. Roth go?’
Easton watched Sophia, dressed in her sleek business attire. She was calm and collected the whole time, whether in the meeting or chatting at lunch, even when it came to him, she didn’t miss a beat.
‘Did she really stop being mad at me?’ Easton couldn’t help but wonder.
But it didn’t take long before he sensed that something just didn’t feel right./
Because Sophia was almost unnaturally calm.
In the days before, whether they were surrounded by people or alone together, Easton could always feel Sophia instinctively pulling away from him, keeping things polite and distant. But you can’t fake what’s in your eyes.
But today, Sophia’s eyes were calm and composed. Even when their gazes met, she simply returned a flawless,
professional smile, polite, but with no cracks in her facade.
It was as if, to her, they were nothing more than colleagues working together.
That made Easton feel unsettled. He thought, ‘I would have preferred Sophia to glare at me or give me the cold shoulder like before. At least then, I’d know she was still upset with him.
‘Her anger meant she still cared.
‘But now, there was nothing at all.’

Sophia finally wrapped up all her urgent work before the New Year. That very day, she booked her flight back to Japoria.
Easton spent the whole day at the hospital with Irene. When he left in the afternoon, he called Gordon.
Easton said, “Gordon, book me a table at Novella Kitchen for seven tonight.”
“Sure thing, Mr. Foster, Gordon answered.

Easton drove back to Grandview Estate. As soon as he stepped out of the elevator, he headed straight for Sophia’s door and rang the bell.
Tomorrow was New Year’s Eve, and Sophia would be with her family, so he wanted to ask her out for dinner tonight, before she got busy.
But when the door opened, it was a woman he didn’t recognize.
“May I ask who you are?” she asked.
Easton kept his voice steady. “Is Ms. Roth home?”
The cleaning lady replied politely, “Ms. Roth already left for Japoria this afternoon.”
