That afternoon, Sophia called Julian and gave him a quick rundown of what was going on with Crestview Group’s port

project.

Julian’s expression turned serious.

“I’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s going on. Don’t worry too much. Crestview Group’s got a strong foundation, so even if the port project doesn’t work out, it won’t be a huge loss for us.

“But this whole thing seems pretty suspicious. I’ll need some time to look into it,” Julian said.

But there was no way Sophia could just brush it off. She thought, ‘Julian was only trying to make me feel better. Since Crestview Group landed the port project, we’d already sunk a third of their available cash into it.

‘If anything went sideways now, everything else, even the Southern Development Zone resort, their biggest priority, would be dead in the water.

‘If the cash flow snapped, Crestview Group would be on the edge of disaster. Honestly, we could go under in an instant.’ No matter what, there was no way Sophia could stay in Japoria and turn her back on Crestview Group.

That night, after finally getting Lucas to sleep, Sophia quietly pulled out her phone and booked her flight back home. She got up early the next morning to pack her bags. Mia glanced at the clock, noticing it was almost time to leave, and Lucas was still fast asleep.

She suggested kindly, “Maybe you should head out first. When he wakes up, I’ll explain everything to him.”

Sophia shook her head. She thought, ‘There was no way I could just slip away without saying goodbye. Lucas was already struggling with not having a dad around. I couldn’t let him carry the pain of feeling abandoned by his mom, too.’

She walked over to the bed and gently shook Lucas awake.

Lucas groggily opened his eyes, sat up, and gave his mom a drowsy look.

“Lucas, I ran into a little trouble at work, so I have to leave Japoria and head back to Jenston for now. Be good, listen to Mia, eat well, and do your best at school.

“Once I’m done with work, I’ll come back to you as soon as I can,” Sophia said softly.

Sophia had braced herself for Lucas to burst into tears, but instead, he just nodded quietly. Maybe he was still groggy or hadn’t really wrapped his head around it yet.

Sophia held Lucas close and kissed the top of his head. “I have to go now, but I promise I’ll call you the moment I land, okay?”

Lucas nodded, looking downcast.

As Sophia was about to leave the room, Lucas scrambled off the bed and dashed over to his desk.

Then, he came running back with a drawing in his hand.

“Mommy, I made this a few days ago. I don’t know who my dad is, but I really wish we could have a family portrait. Look, I even drew Dad in it. Do you like it?” Lucas asked, his eyes full of longing.

Sophia looked at Lucas’s innocent, childlike face, and her eyes turned misty with emotion.

She crouched down in front of him. “I really love it. Thank you so much, Lucas.”

Because of the weather, Sophia had been stuck at the airport for seven hours straight. The whole time, she was practically glued to her phone, going back and forth with May about work.

Right before boarding her flight to Jenston, Sophia tried to pull herself together. She scrolled through the list of potential partners May had just sent, scanning for any promising options.

But just like two days ago, nothing looked promising.

Feeling restless, she slumped back in her seat and shut her eyes, hoping to calm her nerves.

By the time Sophia finally made it back to Jenston, it was already the next morning.

She ordered a ride on her phone, and barely had she settled into the car when her phone rang. It was May.

“Sophia, Irene is awake,” May said.
