Sophia had been in Japoria for four or five days now, and there were only a couple of days left before she had to head back to work in Jenston after the New Year.

Knowing she’d be leaving soon, her heart ached at the thought of leaving Lucas behind.

Japoria’s weather was the complete opposite of Jenston’s right now, bright and sunny. Lucas had been pestering her to take him to the beach ever since they arrived.

Unable to say no to Lucas’s puppy eyes, Sophia finally gave in and brought him to the beach near their villa today.

“Mommy, you can just stay here! I want to play over there by myself,” Lucas said, bouncing with excitement and a hint of childish stubbornness.

Sophia couldn’t really relax and let him play alone. Lucas was growing up and didn’t want his mom hovering, so she agreed on the surface not to get too close. But in reality, she quietly followed him around, never letting him out of her sight.

Just then, her phone rang. The only person besides her family who had her Japoria number was May.

Sophia glanced at the caller ID. Sure enough, it was May.

But it was the middle of the night in Jenston. Why would May be calling at this hour?

‘Did something happen?’ Sophia wondered, a sense of unease creeping in.

Sophia felt a wave of anxiety hit her. “May, why are you calling me at this hour? Did something happen?”

“Sophia, it’s a disaster. The contract we were supposed to sign with Barrington Energy before the New Year was stolen by Weston Group.

“Barrington Energy basically owns half the fuel in Jenston, and now that Weston Group snatched the deal, our port project might not even get off the ground next quarter,” May said, her voice trembling with worry.

Sophia was shocked. “How could this happen? Didn’t we already talk everything through with Marvin from Barrington Energy before the New Year?

“We were supposed to sign the contract after the holiday. Why would they suddenly change their mind and give it to Weston Group, our competitor?”

May didn’t know the full story yet. She was out having dinner with a client tonight when she happened to spot Marvin from Barrington Energy and George from Weston Group eating together in the next private dining room.

Not long after, since she’s Crestview Group’s legal rep, Marvin’s secretary called her.

“It’s obvious the Weston family is behind this. They’re always causing trouble, I thought they’d be out of the game after that last setback, but they still managed to quietly snatch away our important partner behind our backs,” May said angrily. Sophia paused for a moment, then said. “Don’t lose your cool yet. Right now our priority is solving this mess. If Barrington Energy is dead set on ditching Crestview Group for Weston Group, it’s a waste of time to keep chasing after them.

“We’d be better off finding a new partner ASAP to make sure our next quarter’s project runs smoothly.”

May sent over info on a bunch of possible partners, but either their fuel was way overpriced, or the quality just wasn’t up to par. Worst of all, some of them have always been in Weston Group’s pocket.

If Crestview Group teamed up with them now, they’d just be handing Weston Group another chance to trip us up. Sophia’s instincts kicked in. ‘No way. Sure, Crestview Group could walk away from the port project if push comes to shove, but risking the transport safety of countless companies nationwide? Not happening, she thought.

Sophia watched Lucas playing nearby, carefree and happy. As much as she wanted to stay with him, she knew she couldn’t linger in Japoria any longer. She’d have to leave for Jenston by tomorrow, no matter what.

She had to figure out a way to lock down a new partner before next quarter started, just to make sure the port project kept running smoothly.
