Annie stepped forward and stopped him, shaking her head, her face serious. “Sophia said she’s really tired and not feeling well. She doesn’t want to see anyone, and she made it clear that if you came, we’re not allowed to let you see her.”
Easton froze, standing there stiffly. “Why?”
Annie stayed silent, and Julian stepped up, giving Easton a reassuring pat on the shoulder. He said, “She’s probably really not feeling well.
“When Annie and I were up there, she hardly even looked at us. It’s pretty late. Let’s just wait and see how she is tomorrow. Annie will update you first thing.”
Seeing that Easton wouldn’t move, Julian gave up trying to persuade him. He just took Annie’s hand and left, leaving Easton standing there.
Easton and Gordon were still standing in the hospital lobby when Emily stepped out of the elevator. Gordon was quick to walk over to her.
“Emily, how’s Sophia doing?” Gordon asked.
Emily had a few minor scrapes on her face, and Gordon gently handed her a tissue,
“She’s asleep now and looks stable,” Emily replied.
After talking with Gordon for a moment, Emily walked up to Easton. “Easton, Sophia wanted me to give this to you tomorrow, but since you’re already here, I’ll just give it to you now.”
Easton glanced at the voice recorder in Emily’s hand, looking puzzled. “What’s this?”
“After Irene’s accident, Sophia never thought it was just an accident. She had me look into everyone working at the nursing home, and after digging through all the records, we quickly found someone suspicious.
“But Chloe quit and left Jenston just days after it happened. We only managed to track her down in Silverharbor the day before yesterday. Sophia had her brought back, and on the way, Chloe confessed to everything, how she set up Irene.
“We were planning to take her straight to the police tonight, but then the car crash happened. Chloe was knocked out, and we just couldn’t get her out before the car exploded.
“Now there’s no one left who can prove what happened. But Sophia thinks you deserve to know the truth, so she made sure I gave you this voice recorder. What you do with it is your call,” Emily said.
Easton never realized Sophia was still digging into what really happened to Irene. His team had only tracked down Chloe’s whereabouts yesterday.
He couldn’t believe Sophia had acted faster than he. She’d already gotten Chloe back from Silverharbor today.
Easton held the voice recorder in his hand, hesitating. “Did… did Sophia say anything else?” he asked, his voice uncertain. Emily shook her head.
Easton nodded and was about to leave when Emily called out to him. “Easton, Sophia saw you tonight, holding Ms. Weston’ s child and helping her out. It really broke her heart.”
Easton stopped in his tracks, but didn’t turn around. His voice was flat, giving nothing away. “Take care of her.”
Emily was clearly annoyed by Easton’s cold attitude. Gordon could tell what was on her mind and quickly jumped in to explain.
“Emily, don’t get the wrong idea. Easton’s not ignoring Sophia. If anything, he’s way too worried about her. It hurts him to see her like this, and that’s why he’s acting so distant.
“He’s blaming himself, feeling guilty. What happened tonight was a total accident. None of us knew the car that crashed was Sophia’s. Can you help us out and talk to her? Let her know the truth?” Gordon said.
Emily let out a bitter laugh, her voice brimming with anger. “No way. If Easton really cared about how Sophia feels, he wouldn’t always be so caught up in Stella’s business, making Sophia upset time and time again.”
