“Seriously, it’s like you’ve been cursed this year; first a car accident, then almost getting hunted down, and even a mudslide. What kind of bad luck is following you?

“No way, I’m taking tomorrow off and hauling you to the church. We need to get God to watch over you.”

Emily walked up to Sophia, her eyes a little red as she bit her lip. “Sophia, next time you go on a business trip, l’ m coming with you, for real.

“I’ve trained in kickboxing for a few years, so if anything goes down, I can be your bodyguard and protect you.”

Sophia smiled, squeezing Emily’s hand. “Promise, next time I travel for work, you’re coming with me. Seriously, don’t worry; I’m really okay.”

Paolo let out a snort from behind.

Emily turned her head to look at the seriously injured man behind Sophia, her brows furrowing. “What’s so funny?”

Paolo shook his head and said with a straight face, “Even I, a grown man, got my ass handed to me by those guys. With just a few years of kickboxing, you’d be down for the count before you even knew what hit you.

“How are you supposed to protect Ms. Roth like that?”

Emily bit her lip, a little annoyed. “Who are you? I’m talking to Sophia, so why are you butting in?”

Paolo walked up to Emily and held out his hand. “I’m Paolo. Starting today, I’m Ms. Roth’s assistant, driver, and bodyguard.”

Paolo made a point of stressing the bodyguard.

Emily gave Sophia a look like, “Are you serious?” but when Sophia just smiled and nodded, she finally, though clearly reluctant, shook Paolo’s hand.

Sophia patted Paolo’s shoulder. “Emily’s been by my side for more than half a year. At work, she’s my best secretary, and off the clock, she’s like family to me.

“If you ever get lost, just ask Emily. She’ll teach you everything you need to know.”

Paolo flashed a roguish grin. “Alright then, guess I’ll be relying on you a lot, Emily.”

It was only then that Emily realized Paolo was still holding her hand. She quickly pulled it back, her ears going a little pink.
