Easton parked his car, grabbed his keys, and got out, his jacket slung over his arm.

He’d spotted Sophia heading for the elevator when he drove into the garage, thinking he’d miss her again tonight. But to his surprise, she was just standing by the elevator, looking like she was waiting for someone. “Waiting for someone?” Easton asked, one hand in his pocket as he strolled over to her.

Sophia didn’t say anything, just gave a small nod.

Easton could tell she was in a bad mood tonight, so he held back from asking anything. With the way she usually was, she definitely wouldn’t want to talk about it.

He glanced at her, saw she wasn’t budging, and decided to head up.

He walked up to the elevator and pressed the button. When the doors opened, he stepped inside and saw Sophia come in right after him.

Easton gave her a confused look. “Weren’t you waiting for someone?”

Sophia met his eyes. “I was waiting for you.”

The surprise came out of nowhere for Easton; he was at a loss for words. All he knew was that he was thrilled, but also a bit anxious.

“Did you need me for something?” he asked.

Sophia didn’t beat around the bush. “Everwell International belongs to you, right? You’re the one who sent them to help Crestview Group.”

Easton hadn’t expected Sophia to find out so quickly. He glanced at her, but her face was unreadable; he couldn’t tell what she was thinking.

“Yeah,” he replied.

Sophia didn’t even know why she blurted it out, but she just asked, “Why?”

Easton’s gaze was burning as he, without thinking, stepped closer to Sophia. “What do you think?”

The elevator chimed, signaling they’d reached their floor, and the doors slid open.

Easton took Sophia’s hand and led her out.

Sophia quickly came to her senses and gently pulled her hand away from his.

“Sophia, you know why I did all this, right?” Easton said softly.

Sophia looked up at him. “Easton, I really appreciate what you did for Everwell International, but?” She bit her lip and went on, “I thought I’d made it clear. We’re just business partners, that’s all.”

Easton had thought maybe Sophia would see him differently after everything with Everwell International. But she didn’t change at all.

This whole chasing her thing was way harder than he thought.

Easton thought to himself, ‘It’s fine. There’s still plenty of time. I can wait.’

Easton gave her a faint smile. “Since we’re business partners, Crestview Group has a three-year deal with the Maritime Authority.

“Business-wise, I really don’t want to switch suppliers last minute. It could mean financial trouble for Foster Group. And personally, Julian’s your cousin, so of course, I’d step in to help.

“So seriously, you don’t need to feel bad about any of this. I made sure to think it all through before doing anything.”

Sophia couldn’t argue with that. From a business standpoint, if Crestview Group couldn’t find a solid replacement for Barrington Energy in time, Foster Group and the Maritime Authority really would take a financial hit.

After hearing him out, Sophia suddenly felt awkward. ‘Was I just being dramatic? Did I totally overthink this?’ she wondered.

‘Ugh, this is all May’s fault. Why did she have to pick everything apart with me today? Now I’m just stuck overthinking,’ Sophia thought.

She cleared her throat. “Sorry, I jumped to conclusions.” Realizing she’d been a bit rude, she paused, then added, “And thanks for what you did for Everwell International.”
