Paolo had no clue what was running through her mind. He stood there, phone in hand, looking tense. He knew what Julian and his own boss had been planning, but with both of them still missing, he was just as worried as Sophia.

“Ms. Roth, where are we heading?” Paolo asked.

Sophia glanced at the location on her phone and said calmly, “To the mine. Julian’s assistant is waiting for us there.”

Paolo didn’t say anything else. He just got in the pre-booked car with her, and they set off.

The mine was a long way from the airport, over sixty miles, and the mountain roads were winding and treacherous. What should’ve been a quick hour-long drive ended up taking three.

Sophia didn’t dare close her eyes the whole way, her gaze fixed on her phone. From the moment she left Jenston for Rockville, she’d been scrolling through Julian’s emails, trying to figure out what their plan was supposed to be.

Sophia thought, ‘This is reckless. Way too reckless.’

She didn’t really get all the technical stuff, but figured that to that person, it was probably just a cheap trick to cover things up.

Sophia thought, ‘Forget it, finding them comes first.’

By the time Sophia and Paolo arrived at the mine, it was already seven in the evening. Julian’s assistant, Luke, spotted Sophia and hurried over.

“Ms. Roth, you’re here,” Luke said.

Sophia nodded, taking in how gaunt Luke looked, his face drawn and pale. She thought, ‘He must’ve been through hell these past few days.’

Luke pulled Sophia aside and started filling her in on how things had been going with Julian’s plan.

Everything was smooth sailing at first, but then, out of nowhere, something went off the rails. The guy promised to hand over the key info just vanished, like he dropped off the face of the earth.

Julian sent a bunch of people to hunt him down, but it was like the guy had never existed. Not a single lead.

And then, before anyone could figure out what was happening, Julian disappeared too.

After hearing Luke out, Sophia realized her suspicions were spot on. She thought, ‘It has to be Nexterra Resources. They must’ve caught wind of Julian’s plan, so Julian’s disappearance is definitely tied to them.

Nexterra Resources was the same company that sabotaged Prime Energy all those years ago.

Julian and the others had waited years for this, coming back to Rockville to take back what belonged to Richard and Victoria.

What really freaked Sophia out was the thought that Nexterra Resources might’ve kidnapped Julian.

She thought, ‘If that’s not it, then there’s no way Julian would just vanish for days. He’d never go off the grid like this, not even contacting us, especially leaving Annie so scared and worried.

Right now, the only thing that mattered was finding Julian.

Sophia wandered around the mine, memories rushing back of when Richard used to bring her here as a little girl to oversee the operations. So much had changed since those days.

Luke stayed close, telling her that the mine was the very first target Julian and the team set their sights on when they came back to Rockville, and they wasted no time reclaiming it.

Over the years, Nexterra Resources had collected a handful of mines, so this one was just another asset to them: they barely cared about it anymore.

But for the Roth family, this place was a symbol of everything they of fought for.

Sophia didn’t linger at the mine. It was getting late, and the drive back to their hotel would take nearly two hours. She couldn’t afford to waste any more time.

Once she got back, there was still a ton of stuff she needed to follow up on. Most importantly, she had to figure out what Julian was planning next.

The next morning, Sophia headed straight to the company Julian had set up in Rockville two years ago. The place was running like a well-oiled machine: one could tell Julian and his team had done their homework and laid a solid foundation.

Around two in the afternoon, Sophia was in the office, going through paperwork, when her phone suddenly rang: it was her assistant Emily.

“Ms. Roth, it’s a disaster. Crestview Group’s stock is under a vicious attack today: someone’s deliberately crashing it. Trading’s already been halted,” Emily blurted out, her voice shaking with panic.
