Gordon grabbed a thin blanket for Easton, replying politely as usual, “He was just wheeled upstairs to the diagnostics department for some tests. He won’t be back for a while. Since he only woke up yesterday, the doctors want to run several checks on him.”

Stella nodded.

“I’ll go up and stay with him,” she said.

Gordon quickly jumped in, “Ms. Weston, the doctors specifically said no visitors during the tests, not even me.”

Stella didn’t push it.

“Alright, I’ll just wait for him here then,” she replied.

“Okay, I’ll take the blanket upstairs. Feel free to make yourself at home, Ms. Weston,” Gordon said.

As Gordon was about to leave, Stella paused, then called out, “Gordon, nothing out of the ordinary happened after I left yesterday, right?”

Gordon shook his head and said, “No, Mr. Foster fell asleep again not long after you left. The doctors said he gets tired easily since he just woke up, so he needs plenty of rest.

“But don’t worry, he slept soundly last night and didn’t wake up until this morning.”

Stella felt a wave of relief wash over her.

She said, “Even though Easton’s surgery went well, he really needs more time to recover. If there’s nothing urgent at work, I think you don’t need to trouble him with every minor issue.”

Gordon scoffed inwardly, ‘Who does Stella think she is? Now she thinks she can tell me how to do my job for Mr. Foster.

But her words made Gordon even more certain: Stella must have known about Crestview Group’s troubles for a while now. Her hint was clear: even if you know what was going on, keep it from Easton.

Gordon kept his polite and respectful tone. He replied, “Yes, I understand. Ms. Weston, if there’s nothing else, l’ Il take the blanket upstairs to Easton.”

Stella was pleased with how Gordon was treating her now.

After Gordon left, Stella lingered in the room for a bit. As usual, when the room was empty, she walked over to the bed, opened the drawer, and took out Easton’s phone.

Stella knew how to unlock Easton’s phone because once, when she was out eating with Easton and David, David wanted to play with a phone. Stella happened to be on a call, so Easton unlocked his own phone and handed it to David.

That was when Stella accidentally saw Easton’s unlock code.

While Easton was unconscious, Stella would secretly take his phone whenever Gordon wasn’t paying attention or was busy, and go through his messages.

Annie, Sophia, and Kevin from the Maritime Authority had called Easton.

Stella saw the calls coming in but didn’t dare pick up, afraid they’d start asking questions. She waited for the calls to stop, then wiped them all from the call log.

That night, when it was evening in Jenston, Stella had Easton’s phone in her hand again. As soon as Sophia’s name flashed on the screen, Stella picked up and, putting on an act, told Sophia she and Easton were tied up and couldn’t talk.

Sophia stayed silent the whole time, and Stella felt pretty smug about it. She let the silence drag on just to mess with her before hanging up, then erased the evidence, just to be safe.

Now, holding Easton’s phone, Stella unlocked it with practiced ease. Just then, the door to the room swung

open.
