Sophia had been staying at Elmwood Bistro these past few days, barely leaving.
Every time Edith came to keep her company, Sophia would try to say something, but the words always got stuck in her
throat.
Sophia was afraid that the truth might really be just like those online rumors. ‘What if it’s all true?‘ she worried.
Edith sat down beside Sophia and gently took her hand. “Are you trying to figure out if those things people are saying online about your mom and dad are true?”
Sophia couldn’t find her voice; she just nodded quietly in response.
Edith let out a long sigh and drawled, “Maria grew up dirt poor. You’ve been to Redrock City, so you know most folks there barely scrape by.
“When your grandma got sick, they sold off everything just to pay for her treatment, but the county hospital wasn’t much help. Maria and her mom only had each other.
“No matter how tough life got, Maria did whatever she could to make ends meet and pay for her mom’s medical bills.
“That was why she brought her mom to the city, working any job she could find while trying to get her mom the care she
needed.
“Maria was born with a knack for painting. At first, she just worked at a gallery, but the gallery owner soon noticed her talent and let her start working on restoring old paintings.
“One time, George bought a famous ancient painting at an overseas auction. The edges were badly damaged, so he brought the picture to the gallery.
“The moment he saw Maria, he was instantly smitten by how beautiful she was. George was already married and had two kids, but he hid all that and went all out chasing after Maria.
“He wrote to her almost every day and even had his assistant bring her meals, making sure she was well taken care of. At first, Maria ignored him.
“But when George found out your grandma was seriously ill, he stepped in and paid for her treatment.
“Even though your grandma didn’t make it, Maria felt she had to repay him, so she agreed to give him a chance.
“After a while, seeing how genuine and caring he seemed, Maria slowly started to like him back. Because of work, they had a long–distance relationship for over half a year, only keeping in touch through letters.
Later, George made some money, and he quickly brought Maria to live with him. Soon enough, they moved in together, and Maria got pregnant.
“Just when Maria thought she was finally catching a break, George’s wife came knocking on the door. Maria realized she was just the mistress and stormed off in anger.
“She ran off to Riverdale and gave birth there, but it didn’t take long before George’s people found her again.
“George begged Maria to go back to him, promising he’d divorce his wife and marry her. But Maria was already done with. him. All Maria felt for him then was pure disgust and hate.
“But George just wouldn’t give up. To get Maria back, he did all kinds of cruel things to her, even went so far as to use her child as a threat.
“Maria realized George was out of his mind. If she didn’t find a way to escape, her life would be over. That day, Maria had already bought a train ticket and was ready to leave with her few–month–old baby.
“But George chased her down in his car, blocked her on the way to the station, and went completely berserk. He grabbed the baby right out of her arms.
“He even threatened her, saying if she didn’t go with him, he’d take the child and she’d never see her baby again.
“Maria saw her baby crying miserably in his arms, and she fought desperately to get her child back. But George, humiliated and furious, shoved Maria down a slope.
“George thought he’d killed her. He ran off with the baby and left the scene without even a second thought about saving Maria.”
