**The Case of the Bleeding Shadows by Emma Blackwood**
**Chapter 48**
The director had casually mentioned that Easton was in his office, a detail that had sent a ripple of anxiety through Sophia. She had steeled herself for this moment, preparing for the possibility of facing him again, even if she had hoped to avoid it.
Now, in this charged atmosphere, they stood mere feet apart, their eyes locking for a fleeting second, while the bustling world around them seemed to dissolve into an indistinct blur.
With her files clutched tightly in her hand, Sophia brushed past Easton, accompanied by Emily, deliberately averting her gaze. It was as if she was trying to shield herself from the weight of his presence, the memories of their shared past flooding her mind like a tide she could not control.
As they walked away, Sophia launched into an explanation of the next steps for their project, her voice steady and professional, but her heart raced with an awareness of the intense gaze boring into her back. Easton’s stare was a palpable force, and she could almost feel it pressing against her skin.
Easton, on the other hand, was trapped in the shadows of a night that had left him reeling—the night everything had spiraled out of control between them. The chill of Sophia’s indifference wrapped around him like a shroud, leaving him disoriented and confused. He found himself questioning everything. Had she truly changed, or was this cold exterior the real Sophia all along? One truth loomed large—she wanted nothing to do with him, and that realization cut deeper than any wound.
As Sophia and Emily approached the parking lot, a voice unexpectedly pierced through her thoughts, calling her name.
“Katherine?” Sophia turned, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized the woman standing before her.
“Sophia! For a moment, I thought I was imagining things, but it really is you,” the woman exclaimed, her face brightening with recognition. Dressed in a chic pantsuit, Katherine Chandler, who had been three years ahead of Sophia in college, looked as polished and poised as ever.
“Katherine! It feels like ages since we last saw each other,” Sophia replied, her surprise quickly morphing into delight. “The last I heard, you were overseas pursuing your master’s degree.”
Katherine beamed, pulling Sophia into a warm embrace that felt like a comforting anchor amidst the turmoil of her day. “I returned last year. It’s so wonderful to see you again.”
“You too,” Sophia said, relishing the familiarity of the moment. “What have you been up to?”
Being three years Easton’s senior, Katherine had graduated before Sophia, and after she went abroad for her master’s, they gradually lost touch.
“So much time has slipped by, Katherine,” Sophia replied, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. “But I have no regrets. I love my life as it is now—free and independent. I’ve learned not to lose myself in love. This is where I’m meant to be.”
Katherine observed the growth in Sophia, noting how much she had matured over the years. Yet, there was an undeniable essence about her—the captivating beauty that had once earned her the title of the city’s most beautiful woman.
“I’m just so glad you’ve found your happiness,” Katherine said, raising her coffee cup in a toast, her smile genuine and warm. “Let’s promise to stay in touch from now on.”
Sophia lifted her cup in response, a smile brightening her face. “I would like that very much.”
“I heard about the volunteer event at the Jenston Orphanage tomorrow,” Katherine mentioned, her tone shifting to one of curiosity. “They say Crestview Group is sending a representative.”
