Replacement Bride Left With His Baby (Sophia and Easton) novel Chapter 49

**The Case of the Bleeding Shadows by Emma Blackwood**
**Chapter 49**

Sophia lifted her cup of coffee, the rich aroma wafting up to her nose, and took a small sip. A smile crept across her face as she nodded in acknowledgment. “That’s me,” she replied, her voice warm and inviting.

Katherine returned the smile, her eyes sparkling with delight. “What a coincidence! I’m here representing my company as well.”

They exchanged amused glances and a light laugh bubbled between them, a shared moment of camaraderie that felt refreshing amidst their busy lives.

“See you tomorrow, then,” Katherine said, standing up to leave for her meeting, her demeanor shifting to one of purpose.

“See you,” Sophia replied, her voice tinged with anticipation for their next encounter.

As they stepped out of the café together, the brisk air greeted them, and they parted ways, each heading into the whirlwind of their respective days.

Katherine had just returned to the executive floor of the Foster Group, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished floor, when she spotted Easton emerging from his office. “Mr. Foster,” she greeted him with a polite nod, her files clutched tightly in her hands as she passed by.

He acknowledged her presence with a brief nod, his expression unreadable.

Katherine approached Gordon’s desk, handing him a stack of documents. “These are the supplies for tomorrow’s orphanage visit. Would you mind reviewing them and signing if everything looks good?” she asked, her tone professional yet friendly.

Gordon took the papers, his brow furrowing slightly as he examined them with meticulous care.

“I heard several companies are sending representatives to the volunteer event tomorrow?” he inquired, glancing up from the documents.

“That’s right,” Katherine confirmed, her enthusiasm bubbling to the surface. “I ran into Ms. Roth from Crestview Group earlier today on my way back from the Maritime Authority. She mentioned she would be attending as a corporate representative as well.”

Gordon nodded, his pen poised over the document. After a moment of consideration, he signed off on the papers, handing them back to Katherine, who felt a sense of relief wash over her.

As she turned to leave, Gordon was about to retreat to his office when Easton called out to him. “The Jenston Orphanage is holding a volunteer event tomorrow?” Easton inquired, his tone curious.

“Yes,” Gordon replied, his voice steady. “It’s an annual tradition where all the major companies in the city take turns sending representatives to spend a day at the orphanage and lend a helping hand.”

Inside, the Crestview Group had generously sent over a large shipment of colorful toys, and Emily was in her element, joyfully distributing them to the eager children who surrounded her, their faces lighting up with delight.

Sophia watched, her heart swelling with warmth as she observed the children’s laughter and excitement. She found herself unable to refuse any of their playful requests, each one met with a gentle smile and a nod.

Before long, the children tugged at her hands, their enthusiasm infectious as they led her to the backyard. There, a magnificent apple tree stood proudly, its branches heavy with glossy, ripe fruit, glistening in the sunlight.

“Wait here while I find something to help us reach the fruit!” Sophia exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with mischief and amusement.

The children erupted into cheers, their joy echoing around the yard as they jumped up and down, their excitement palpable.

With a borrowed tool from the staff, Sophia attempted to reach the fruit, her determination unwavering. However, despite her best efforts, the apples remained tantalizingly out of reach. After several failed attempts, frustration began to bubble beneath her cheerful exterior.

Just as she finally managed to grasp one of the apples, her exhilaration caused her to overlook the stairs nearby. In a split second, her foot missed the next step, and she felt herself teetering dangerously.
