Inside Foster Group, Gordon knocked and entered. “Mr. Foster, Ms. Roth’s secretary brought over a check for

you.”

Easton was reviewing a contract, his brow furrowed. He glanced up at the check in Gordon’s hand. “What check?”

Gordon looked just as puzzled, but repeated what he’d been told. “She said your suit jacket got ruined in the wash, so this check is compensation.”

Easton took the check and gave Sophia’s signature a meaningful look. He raised an eyebrow, guessing Sophia probably never even bothered to get it cleaned. She probably just tossed it out in a fit of anger. ‘She really is petty,’ Easton thought.

“Is her secretary gone?” Easton asked, his tone suddenly sharper.

“Yeah, she dropped off the check and headed out right after,” Gordon replied.

Easton nodded. “Can you call the Maritime Authority and check when next week’s meeting is scheduled? Tell them to notify Crestview Group. Their rep needs to be present. And make sure their suppliers stay in line with the shipping policies we finalized last time.”

“Got it, Mr. Foster,” Gordon replied.

Once Gordon left, Easton slipped the check into his wallet.

Sophia finally got a break today, so she made plans to go shopping with May.

“Ms. Roth, this is so rare. You’re actually not stuck working overtime and have time for me. I seriously can’t even remember the last time we went out like this,” May laughed.

May had been waiting at the mall for a while. When she spotted Sophia, she grinned and immediately wrapped her arm around Sophia’s.

Sophia smiled, “It was crazy busy for me, but ever since Emily joined the team, things have been so much easier. She’s super sharp and quick with her work. I don’t need to keep an eye on things. Overtime’s basically a thing of the past.”

“Well, congrats! Sounds like you’ve got yourself a great assistant,” May said.

As they browsed through the racks, May rolled her eyes while listening to Sophia talk about the nursing home incident.

“Can you believe it? Easton, the almighty CEO of Foster Group, actually got totally wrapped around a woman’s finger. No one but him would fall for that pure-and-innocent routine Stella pulls,” May snarked.

Sophia sighed irritably. “Just drop it. I really don’t want to think about them. Ever since I got back, bad luck has been following me everywhere. Who knows what trouble’s coming for me next?”

“Knock on wood!” May said quickly, trying to chase away the bad vibes.

‘Seriously, I just totally jinxed myself, Sophia thought, feeling like her words had cursed them for real. And just like that, right when they were ready to pay and leave, they bumped straight into Stella.

Minnie spotted Sophia and May the moment she walked in. “Stella, talk about bad luck! Jenston’s massive, and there are malls everywhere, yet we keep running into people we’d rather not see.”

May couldn’t stand Minnie putting on airs in front of her. “Sophia, suddenly the air in here feels sketchy. I thought it was something else, but it’s the stink of a fox and stale mold. Let’s hurry up. This place sets off all my alarms.”

Minnie instantly caught on to May’s jab-she was basically calling her the family’s dirty little secret, that illegitimate daughter nobody dared talk about.

“May, just because you’re a lawyer doesn’t mean you can run your mouth. Don’t think I won’t hit you with a slander lawsuit!” Minnie shot back.

May couldn’t help but laugh. “Minnie, if you’re that uneducated, maybe spend a few more years hitting the books. Did you actually hear me slander anyone? Who was I talking about? Was it you, or maybe your friend beside you?”

Stella pulled Minnie back, plastering on a polite smile. “Ms. Young, Minnie’s always had a tough time growing up and was bullied a lot, so she’s naturally a bit sensitive. Hope you don’t mind her.”

Sophia looked at Stella’s insincere grin, thinking, ‘Figures. Guys just eat up this fake, demure act. Honestly, I couldn’t be more disgusted.’
