69 Chapter 89
89.Chapter 89
“He didn’t see Emily around, but knew I was stopping by to see you. He wanted me to let you know to get ready and attend it with him tonight.”
Sophia nodded. “Got it,” she replied.
She closed the file and handed it back to May. “Overall, the contract is fine. I’ve highlighted all the items that need revision. Just organize everything according to my notes.”
May took the file and eyed Sophia with suspicion. “Sophia, when I passed through the lobby just now, I saw the receptionists tossing a huge bouquet of flowers into the trash by the back stairs. I overheard them saying you told them to get rid of it?”
Sophia sighed and told May about Nicolas sending her flowers, and what went down yesterday at the Maritime Authority parking lot.
May said, “Nicolas is way too blatant. Sophia, he’s even more dangerous than Stella. Next time you see him, you need to get out of there immediately. If Frank hadn’t happened to show up, there’s no telling what he might’ ve tried.”
May was genuinely worried, practically begging Sophia to stay alert.
“I know,” Sophia said.
May said, “Guys like him will go after any woman, and you’re no exception. He wouldn’t dare try anything in public, but what worries me is if you end up alone with him somewhere.”
May was right. What happened in the parking lot was a case in point. The thought still sent chills down Sophia’ s spine. She really was lucky Frank had shown up just in time.
“Next time you go to a meeting at the Maritime Authority, you should bring a male assistant with you. It’ll be safer,” May advised.
Sophia nodded.
At seven that evening, Sophia brought Emily along, and together they rode in Julian’s car to the hotel.
“Mr. Roth, Ms. Roth, you’re late. That means three drinks each-no excuses,” someone called out as soon as they arrived.
Julian just smiled, raised his glass, and downed the drink without a second thought.
Sophia didn’t hesitate either.
Emily was quick to top off her glass with soda, leaning in to whisper, “Sophia, just sip on this so you don’t have to drink too much.”
Sophia knew how thoughtful and attentive Emily was, so she drank the soda without protest.
After a few rounds of drinks, the lively atmosphere in the private room was getting a bit much for Sophia. Spotting that the dinner was about to wrap up, she found an excuse, pulled Emily along, and ducked out ahead
of the crowd.
She let Julian know they’d be waiting for him in the car.
Sophia had quite a few drinks tonight, and now the alcohol was starting to make her feel a bit queasy. Emily put an arm around her and helped her toward the restroom.
Just then, a man stepped out of the private room next door. When he spotted Sophia passing by, he quickly ducked back inside.
“Mr. Weston, guess who I just saw?” the man said.
Nicolas was busy with a woman, his hand about to land on her back, when he was interrupted. He shot the guy a glare, clearly annoyed. “Can’t you see I’m busy? What is it?”
The man leaned in and whispered something in Nicolas’s ear.

Nicolas burst out laughing, shoved the woman aside, and said, “Go handle it. I’ll be waiting in the room.”
The guy got his instructions and made a call right away.
Sophia was huddled over the toilet, retching helplessly, while Emily stayed close, gently rubbing her back to
comfort her.
“Sophia, are you alright? Should I run out to the car and grab you something to help with the alcohol?” Emily
asked.
Sophia nodded, handing over her jacket for Emily to hold.
After making sure Sophia was settled on the toilet, Emily slipped out and quietly pulled the door shut behind her, giving Sophia a moment to collect herself.
Emily realized her hands were dirty and decided to wash up before grabbing the medicine. She leaned against the door, totally unaware that a man had just slipped inside.
The guy caught sight of the woman’s back-it matched his boss’s instructions to a tee. And with that jacket in her hands, just like his boss had described, he was certain he’d found the right target.
He quickly whipped out a handkerchief, clamped it over Emily’s nose and mouth from behind. She fought for a few seconds, but then her whole body slumped-she was out cold.
