The room buzzed with fresh gossip the second the security guy dropped Sebastian’s name.
“Wait–Sebastian personally gave Amelia an invite? What the hell?”
“I thought everyone said she wasn’t good enough for him. Why would he want her here?”
“Pfft, you know Amelia. She probably begged him on her knees. Girl has zero shame.”
Sophia saw her opening and jumped right in, voice dripping with fake concern.
“Amelia, ever since you came back to the Bennett family and heard about the Sterling marriage, you’ve been chasing Sebastian nonstop. I warned you over and over again. Why won’t you listen?”
She sounded like the perfect big sister–disappointed but still trying to save her little sister from herself. The crowd ate it up.
Right then, Alexander–suit sharp, face like thunder–stormed over. The scar on his forehead was impossible to miss. (Amelia had smashed a vase into his skull back at the hospital.)
“Amelia, how many times have I told you to stay the hell away from Sebastian?” he snapped. “You’re embarrassing the entire Bennett family. When are you going to stop?”
He couldn’t stand the sight of her.
“Seriously, just leave before you ruin Vanessa’s night.”
Laura appeared behind Sophia’s wheelchair, hands gripping the handles, looking every bit as annoyed.
“Yeah, Amelia. Maybe you should go.”
Amelia stared at the three of them–her so–called family–and saw nothing but pure disgust. They all wished she’d crawl back into the gutter and disappear forever.
Funny. She was the real Bennett daughter.
She gave a little shrug, still holding her champagne.
“I didn’t even want to come, but Sebastian insisted. How could I say no?” She flashed Vanessa a sweet smile. “Sorry, Vanessa. I’ll get out of your way.”
Then, right in front of everyone, she turned on her hee hips swaying, and strolled straight out to the garden like she owned the place.
Vanessa’s perfectly made–up face twisted with fury.
This was her birthday. Her night. And that little bitch had jus stolen the spotlight without even trying
Laura quickly turned to Vanessa, voice oozing fake sympathy.
“I’m so sorry, Vanessa. My daughter really has no class. Hease don’t let her ruin your evening
She shot a venomous glare at Amelia’s back in the garden.
If she could, Laura would’ve shipped her straight back to that mountain village and forgotten she existed.

“Oh you’re mad?” She grinned, all bright eyes and perfect teeth, stretching out on the chair like she owned the garden. Fler bare feet swung lazily in the air. “Too bad we’re at the Sterlings‘ house. You can’t touch ne Waniltintwant you to pop a blood vessel and drop dead, right?”
Alexander clutched his chest, skin going ghost–white as a fresh wave of fury hit him.
Amelia gasped theatrically. “Oh no, Alexander! Looks like a heart attack. Better go lie down before you die young and handsome–wouldn’t that be a tragedy?
Pure glee damnedin her voice.
Alexander groundhis teeth, spun on his heel, and stalked off without another word.
One more secondinear that girl and he really would drop dead.
Amelia sat alone inthe garden, scrolling through her phone and looking bored out of her mind. Not a single big–shot guest wantellanything to do with her, and honestly, the feeling was mutual.
