stared at the letter for several seconds before I trusted myself to read it again.

The envelope had arrived without warning and after everything that had happened recently, I had expected another problem to land in my lap.

Instead, the first sentence gave me something I hadn’t felt in a very long time. Relief.

I lowered myself into Uncle Will’s old office chair and carefully unfolded the remaining pages.

The bank had sent a formal statement regarding the business accounts, outstanding loans and

several debts that had been attached to Lawson Customs when I inherited the garage.

I knew the business had been improving and I knew the restoration contracts were bringing in more money. I knew regular customers were returning after the break in.

What I hadn’t realized was how much all of that progress had changed the financial position of the

business. I read the figures slowly and then I checked them again.

Several major debts had been completely paid off. The equipment loan was gone. The old supplier

balance was gone and the emergency business loan Uncle Will had taken years ago was gone.

The bank balance had grown steadily over the past several months and the new restoration

contract with Oliver Hayes had given the business enough security to plan ahead instead of

constantly worrying about the next bill.

I sat back in the chair.

“We did it.” I said.

The words barely made it past my lips and I looked toward the photograph of Uncle Will hanging

on the wall.

“We actually did it.” I said as my vision blurred.

I tried blinking the tears away but they kept coming.

For years, Lawson Customs had felt like something I needed to defend. Against my parents. Against Charlotte. Against customers who underestimated me and against people who thought a woman my age couldn’t run a serious motorcycle business.

I had spent so much time fighting to keep the doors open that I hadn’t stopped to realize the doors were no longer in danger of closing.

The garage was stable. Not barely surviving. Stable.

I covered my face with both hands as the tears finally slipped free. They weren’t tears of sadness. They were the kind that came after holding your breath for too long and I laughed quietly through

“Uncle Will, I think you’d be proud.” I said.

A knock sounded against the office door and I quickly wiped my cheeks.

“Come in.” I called out and Jace stepped inside.

He stopped immediately when he saw me and his expression changed.

“What happened?” He asked.

“Nothing bad.” I said but he crossed the room anyway.

“You’re crying.” He said.

“I’m allowed.” I said.

“Of course you’re allowed.” He said.

He crouched beside my chair and gently took my hands away from my face.

“Tell me.” He said so I handed him the letter.

He read the first page, then the second and his eyes widened slightly.

“Paige.” He said.

“I know.” I said and he looked at me.

“You paid it all off?” He asked.

“Apparently.” I said and he smiled.

“That’s incredible.” He said and I laughed again.

“I kept thinking we were just getting through things.” I said.

“You were.” He said.

“Now we’re actually doing well.” I said.

Jace placed the letter on the desk and stood and then he pulled me gently to my feet.

I stepped into his arms without hesitation and his hands settled around my waist while mine

rested against his chest.

“We did it.” I whispered.

“We.” I said and he smiled.

“Fine. We did it.” He said and I leaned closer, resting my forehead against his.
