CHAPTER 70

Paige’s POV

The day had started normally. That was the part that bothered me most later.

One minute I had been focused on work orders, customer calls and restoration schedules. And the

next minute everything I thought I knew about my family had been turned upside down.

I was in the workshop helping Ben install a rebuilt carburetor when I heard the familiar sound of

motorcycles pulling into the lot.

That wasn’t unusual.

The Iron Vipers visited Lawson Customs almost daily but what caught my attention was the look

on Derek’s face when he walked through the front doors.

He wasn’t smiling. He wasn’t joking and he wasn’t acting like himself at all so my stomach

tightened immediately.

Something was wrong and Ben noticed it too.

“What happened?” I asked as Derek glanced toward me.

“Where’s Jace?” He asked.

The question only made me more nervous.

“Office.” I said.

Without another word, Derek headed straight for the office and I exchanged a look with Ben.

Neither of us liked what we were seeing and a few moments later, Jace appeared in the office

doorway.

“Paige.” Jace said and the tone of his voice made my pulse quicken.

“What happened?” I asked.

I

“Come here.” He said so I wiped my hands on a rag and followed him.

The moment I stepped into the office, I noticed several photographs spread across the desk. Derek stood beside the window and Jace stood near the desk. Neither looked happy as I glanced down and then I froze.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process what I was seeing. The photographs showed an old

warehouse.

CHAPTER 70

A woman stood near the entrance.

Dyed blonde hair, familiar posture, familiar face.

Charlotte.

My sister. Standing with Victor Kane and the room suddenly felt very small.

“No.” I said.

The word slipped out before I could stop it as Jace remained silent and Derek folded his arms so I looked again.

Charlotte and Victor together. Standing close enough that there was no possibility this was an

accident.

“No.” I repeated as I shook my head.

“This isn’t real.” I said.

“It is.” Derek said quietly and I looked at him.

“Maybe she was there by coincidence.” I said and his expression softened slightly.

“Paige.” He said.

“Maybe she didn’t know who he was.” I said.

Even as I said it, I knew how ridiculous it sounded. Charlotte wasn’t stupid.

Selfish, manipulative and cruel. But not stupid so I picked up one of the photographs and my hands

were shaking.

There were several images. Different angles. Different moments.

Enough evidence to eliminate any doubt. The meeting had happened and Charlotte had gone there

intentionally and Victor had met her intentionally.

Neither looked surprised to see the other which made my stomach twisted painfully.

“How did you get these?” I asked and Derek pointed toward the photographs.

“One of our guys followed her.” He said.

“You followed Charlotte?” I asked.

“She’d been acting suspicious.” He said and I looked back at the images.

The proof was undeniable and I wanted to argue. I wanted to find another explanation. I wanted somebody to tell me the photographs were fake.

CHAPTER 70

Instead, all I found was reality staring back at me. Charlotte had willingly met with a man connected to attacks against Lawson Customs.

Clai

Alman connected to the people who had smashed my windows. Damaged customer motorcycles. Followed me. Watched me. Threatened my business and threatened my life.

And my own sister had met him in secret so I lowered myself into a chair and the office suddenly felt too quiet.

“Why?” I asked.

Nobody answered because nobody knew so Jace moved closer.

His hand settled gently on my shoulder and the simple touch grounded me so I stared at the

photographs.

“I don’t understand.” I said.

“You don’t have to understand it today.” Jace said as I looked up at him.

“She knew what happened to the garage.” I said.

“I know.” He said.

“She knew people were following me.” I said.

“I know.” He said and my throat tightened.

“She knew.” I said.

The reality hit me all over again. Charlotte hadn’t accidentally become involved. She had chosen

this. Every attack. Every threat. Every frightening moment.

There was a chance my sister had helped make them happen and I covered my eyes.

For years Charlotte had lied, manipulated and sabotaged. But this felt different. This felt darker

and more dangerous.

“I kept defending her.” I said as my voice sounded broken.

“I kept telling myself she wasn’t that bad.” I continued so Jace crouched beside my chair.

“Paige.” He said.

“I kept making excuses.” I said as his hand slid into mine.

“Because she’s your sister.” He said and I laughed bitterly.

“Some sister.” I said.

CHAPTER 70

The office fell silent and for several minutes nobody spoke.

Clair

Nsimply stared at the photographs while trying to process everything. Eventually Derek cleared his

throat.

“We don’t know exactly what was discussed.” Derek said and I looked at him.

“Does it matter?” I asked.

“Maybe.” He said but I shook my head.

“She met him.” I said.

“Yes.” He said.

“Secretly.” I said.

“Yes.” He said.

“After everything that’s happened.” I said and Derek sighed.

“Yeah.” He said.

That answer hurt more than I expected because there was no argument left. No defense or

explanation. Just facts.

Charlotte had crossed a line and she had done it willingly so Jace squeezed my hand.

“You aren’t responsible for her choices.” Jace said.

“She’s family.” I said.

“That doesn’t make her your responsibility.” He said.

I wanted to believe that. Part of me did but another part still remembered two little girls sharing a

bedroom. Sharing secrets. Sharing birthdays.

Somewhere along the way, Charlotte had become someone I barely recognized. And now I wasn’t

even sure when that transformation had happened.

Maybe it had started years ago. Maybe I just hadn’t wanted to see it.

My phone suddenly rang and the sound made everyone jump slightly so I pulled it from my pocket.

The screen displayed a name I hadn’t expected.

Charles Lawson. My father.

“He never calls me.” I said and Jace’s expression darkened.
