That’s helpful. I said.

“I try.” She said and I stepped closer.

“Charlotte, I don’t want a fight.” I said.

“Neither do I.” She said.

“I just want the truth.” I said.

“You won’t find it here.” She said.

I studied her face, but she gave me nothing. No nervousness. No hesitation. No obvious lie and

that bothered me more than anger would have.

“Where did you get the jewellery?” I asked as she raised an eyebrow.

“Excuse me?” She asked.

“The necklace, bracelet, ring, and everything else.” I asked so she smiled.

“I told you.” She said.

“Someone gave them to you.” I said.

“Yes.” She said.

“Who?” I asked.

“Someone who appreciates me.” She said.

The same answer so I crossed my arms.

“That’s convenient.” I said and Charlotte’s smile widened.

“You sound jealous.” She said.

“I’m not jealous.” I said.

“Then why are you asking?” She asked.

“Because you suddenly have expensive jewellery and a new car, and that’s strange considering I know what you used to earn.” I said and her expression hardened for a moment.

“You don’t know everything about my life.” She said.

“Maybe not.” I said.

“Exactly.” She said as I took a slow breath.

“Did someone connected to the Black Reapers give you those things?” I asked and her eyes

flashed before she laughed.

“You’re becoming paranoid.” She said.

“Answer the question.” I said.

“I don’t have to answer anything.” She said and I stared at her so she stepped closer.

“You came here expecting to catch me doing something wrong, but you’re going to leave disappointed.” She added.

“Maybe.” I said as she smiled again.

“Maybe you’re finally realizing that not everyone wants to be on your side.” She said.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means I’ve finally met people who appreciate what I bring to the table.” She said and my stomach tightened.

“What do you bring to the table?” I asked as Charlotte’s smile became smug.

“More than you think.” She said.

“Who are these people?” I asked.

“You’ll find out eventually.” She said and I stared at her.

“Charlotte.” I said but she walked toward the door.

“I think we’re done.” She said as I followed her into the hallway.

“If you’re involved in this, I’ll find out.” I said as she opened the door.

“Then I guess you’ll have something to look forward to.” She said.

I stepped outside, and she closed the door behind me.

I walked back to my car slowly, because my thoughts were moving faster than I could keep up with them. I didn’t have proof. But I had questions.

The jewellery hadn’t been there before. The new SUV hadn’t been there before. Neither had the confidence in Charlotte’s voice. She had looked different. Not happier. Not exactly. She just looked powerful.

stared at her house through the windshield. Whoever was giving Charlotte those gifts had money. Alot of money. And if Charlotte really had connections to someone involved with the Black

Reapers, then the rumours about Lawson Customs might only be the beginning.

Then my phone rang.

Jace.

“Hey.” I answered.

“Where are you?” He asked and I hesitated.

“Charlotte’s.” I said and there was a pause.

“Why?” He asked.

“I went to talk to her.” I said.

“Paige.” He said.

“I didn’t accuse her of anything.” I said.

“That’s not what I asked.” He said.

“I just wanted answers.” I said.

His voice softened, although I could still hear the tension underneath it.

“Come back to the shop.” He said.

“Okay.” I said.

“I’ll explain when you get here.” He said.

“What’s happened?” I asked and another pause followed.

“We got information about another Black Reaper meeting.” He said and my stomach tightened.

“When?” I asked.

“Tonight.” He said.

“Where?” I asked.

“We don’t know yet.” He said.
