CHAPTER 99-1
Sunday dinner had become something I looked forward to and after the weeks we had survived, I needed the warmth of familiar faces more than I wanted to admit.
I woke late, showered, brushed my teeth, and pulled my hair into a loose ponytail before heading downstairs. The smell of food was already drifting through the building, and I could hear children laughing outside.
When I stepped through the back door, I found Emma and the other wives preparing food beneath the covered patio.
“You’re late.” Emma called and I smiled.
“I’m five minutes late.” I said.
“That’s late enough.” She said and I laughed and grabbed an apron.
“What needs doing?” I asked.
“Vegetables.” She said.
“Give them to me.” I said.
I moved toward the kitchen counter and started chopping while the others prepared salads, sauces, and desserts.
Outside, the children were running around with Diesel, and the dog happily chased after them while they screamed with laughter.
One child threw a ball and Diesel ran after it but another child tried to beat him to it.
Diesel won.
The child immediately complained.
“That’s cheating!” She yelled and Emma laughed.
“He’s a dog.” Emma said.
“He runs too fast.” She said.
I smiled as I watched through the open doors and everything felt peaceful.
After everything that had happened, peace had become something I noticed. It wasn’t something I took for granted anymore.
Mason walked through the kitchen and stole a piece of carrot and Emma smacked his hand.
“Stop stealing food.” Emma snapped.
“I’m tasting it.” Mason said.
“You’ve tasted everything.” Emma said.

“That’s quality control.” Mason said and I laughed.
“You’ve got a very generous definition of quality control.” I said as Mason grinned.
“Someone has to do it” Mason said.
He disappeared outside before Emma could respond and I shook my head.
“He’s impossible.” I said.
“That’s why we keep him around.” Emma replied.

The afternoon passed quickly and by the time dinner was ready, the long outdoor table was filled with food.
Everyone gathered around and the children took their seats while the adults filled plates.
Jace sat beside me, and his hand rested briefly against my knee beneath the table.
“You okay?” He asked and I smiled.
“I’m good.” I said.
“You seem happy.” He said.
“I am.” I said as he smiled.
“Good.” He said.
Dinner was loud, because everyone talked over each other while the children argued about football, and every few minutes someone burst into laughter.
Mason told another ridiculous story about the previous week’s operation, while Derek corrected nearly every detail.
“You weren’t even there for half of it.” Derek said.
“I was there.” Mason said.
“You were hiding behind a truck.” Derek said.
“I was strategically positioned.” Mason said.
“Behind a truck.” Derek said.
“Still strategic.” Mason said and everyone laughed.
I leaned back in my chair and looked around the table.
The people sitting here had become part of my life without me even realizing when it happened.
They had helped me through fires. They had protected my business. They had stood beside me when the rumours spread and they had helped rebuild when things were destroyed.
And somehow, I had become part of them too.

After dinner, the children ran outside again, and the adults remained around the table with drinks and dessert and Jace stood.
