VICTORIA POV

I knew something was wrong before Charles even walked through the front door, because the way he closed the door told me he wasn’t coming home for dinner.

He slammed it hard enough to make the framed photographs on the hallway wall shake, and when I looked up from the kitchen table, I saw the anger written across his face.

“What’s happened?” I asked but he didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked into the kitchen and dropped his keys onto the counter.

“How long have you been lying to me?” He asked as my stomach tightened.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said.

“Don’t do that.” He said.

His voice was colder than usual, and I immediately knew this wasn’t going to be a normal argument so I stood slowly.

“What did I lie about?” I asked.

“Paige.” He said and my heart sank.

“What about her?” I asked.

“You met her.” He said and I stared at him.

“Who told you that?” I asked as his expression hardened.

“Does it matter?” He asked.

“Yes,” I said.

“Charlotte told me.” He said.

Of course she did.

“I met Paige for coffee.” I said and Charles laughed bitterly.

“Coffee.” He said.

“Yes.” I said.

“You’ve been meeting behind my back.” He said.

“I didn’t think I needed your permission.” I said and his eyes narrowed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked.

“Because I knew you’d react exactly like this.” I said and he stepped closer.

“What did you tell her?” He asked.

“The truth.” I said.

“What truth?” He asked.

“The truth about you.” I said and his face hardened.

“What exactly did you say?” He asked as I crossed my arms. –

“That you’re struggling with losing control.” I said and Charles stared at me,

“That’s what you told her?” He asked.

“Yes.” I said.

“You’ve been turning her against me.” He said.

“No.” I said.

“Charlotte said Paige manipulated you.” He said and I froze.

“Charlotte said what?” I asked.

“She told me that Paige had been manipulating you for months, and now you’ve decided to take her side.” He said and I stared at him.

“That’s a lie.” I said.

“Why would she lie?” He asked.

“Because she has a reason.” I said.

“What reason?” He asked as I took a breath.

“Because she’s afraid Paige is getting everything she wants.” I said and Charles shook his head.

“You’re blaming Charlotte now?” He asked.

“I’m telling you what I’ve seen.” I said.

“You’ve always had a problem with Charlotte.” He said.

“No.” I said.

“I’ve watched you criticize her.” He said.

“Because I was beginning to see what she was doing.” I said as his expression changed.

“What is that supposed to mean?” He asked.

“It means I don’t trust her anymore.” I said and Charles stared at me.

“You’ve changed.” He said.

“Yes.” I said as he stepped closer.

“Then what did?” He asked.

I could hear the clock ticking on the wall, and for a moment, neither of us moved.

“Charlotte said Paige has been using you.” He said.

“Charlotte has been telling you whatever she needs you to believe.” I said as his jaw tightened.
