he Black Reapers didn’t drive past the garage the next morning and that should have made me

feel better. Instead, it somehow made everything worse.

At least when they rode past, I knew where they were.

Now I found myself glancing toward the highway every few minutes and I was almost expecting. the sound of motorcycles to roll through town again.

It was ridiculous and I had work to do.

An old Indian motorcycle sat on the lift waiting for new brake pads while Ben was busy learning the difference between organizing tools and created what he called ‘creative storage’ and my appointment book was fuller than it had ever been.

Life should have felt normal but it didn’t.

I tightened the last bolt on the brake caliper before stepping back.

“Ben.” I sang out.

“Yeah?” He said looking up from the parts shelves.

“If I ask for a ten millimeter socket and you hand me another screwdriver, I’m putting you on broom duty for the rest of the day.” I said and he looked down at what he was holding.

“I thought this felt wrong.” He said.

“It had absolutely nothing in common with a socket.” I said.

“It was worth a try.” He said and I laughed and shook my head.

“I admire your confidence.” I said.

“You should.” He said.

“It’s completely unsupported by evidence.” I said.

George wandered through the front door carrying his usual travel mug.

“Morning.” He said.

“Morning George.” I aid and he looked at Ben.

“You break anything yet?” George asked and Ben looked offended.

“Not today.” Ben said and George smiled.

“The day’s still young.” George said and Ben pointed toward me.

“She saus the same thing.” Ben said.

“That’s because she’s learning.” George said.

George took a sip of coffee before lowering his voice.

“You look distracted.” He said.

“I’ve got motorcycles to fix.” I shrugged.

“You’ve also looked out that front window six times since I walked in.” He said.

Had I? Apparently I had and I sighed.

“I’m developing a really unhealthy relationship with that road.” I said and George followed my gaze

toward the highway.

“Still thinking about those riders?” He asked.

“I keep telling myseldf it was probably nothing.” I said.

“And?” He asked.

“My instincts keep telling me otherwise.” I said and George nodded thoughtfully.

“Always listen to your instincts.” George said.

“I usually do.” I said.

“They’ve saved me more than once.” He said.

Before I could answer the familiar sound of a motorcycle rolled into the parking lot.

I didn’t need to look because I already knew the engine and Ben notice me smiling.

“There he is.” Ben said.

“There who is?” I asked and he grinned.

“The guy who somehow keeps bringing coffee without admitting he’s bringing coffee.” Ben said.

“I don’t smile.” I said.

“You literally just did.” Ben said.

“I absolutely did not.” I said.

“You absolutely did.” He said and I pointed a grease stained rag at him.

“And?” He asked.

“I can make your life difficult.” I said.
