was six.” I said and Hunter started laughing. Even Jace smiled.

The mood lightened for one a moment before he looked back at me.

“If anything changes, I want you to call me.” Jace said.

“I’ve survived annoying people before.” I said.

“I’m serious.” He said.

“So am I. I appreciate the conver but they’ve only driven past.” I said folding my

arms.

Hunter exchanged a glance with Jace but they didn’t say anything and that silence bothered me as

I looked between them.

“What?” I asked and Hunter rubbed the back of his neck.

“I don’t like coincidences.” Hunter said.

“I don’t either.” I said.

“I also don’t like people scouting businesses.” Hunter said and I raised an eyebrow.

“You two really know how to brighten a Tuesday.” I said.

Neither of them smiled and I sighed dramatically.

“Fine.” Jace said.

“I’ll stay alert. Happy?” I asked.

“Not really.” Hunter admitted.

“I was hoping you’d promise not to leave the garage.” Jace said and I laughed.

“I’ve got groceries to buy.” I said.

“We can get groceries.” Jace said.

“I’ve got to visit the hardware store.” I aid.

“We can do that too.” Jace said. And I placed both hands on my hips.

“What is this? A witness protection program for mechanics?” I asked and Hunter almost smiled.

“Something like that.” He said and I shook my head.

“I think you’re all overreacting.” I said.

Just then the familiar rumble echoed outside once more.

The Black Reapers rode slowly past the garage for the fourth time that day and I watched them disappear before turning back toward Hunter.

“They’re staring to feel like stalkers.” I said and I waited for someone to laugh. But nobody did.

The workshop became uncomfortably quiet and even Ben stopped working.

The only sound came from the ticking of the clock above the office door.

For the first time since the motorcycles had started appearing I stopped making jokes long enough to wonder if everyone else knew something I didn’t.

The rest of the afternoon passed with an uneasy calm.

Customers continued coming and going, Ben carefully worked through the growing list of service jobs and I did my best to pretend nother hasd changed.

The only difference was that I noticed things I normally wouldn’t.

Hunter stepped outside every few minutes to glance toward the highway and Jace lingered much longer than usually before finally climbing onto his own motorcycle.

Even Derek stopped by under the excuse of collecting a part he’d forgotten the day before.

Nobody admitted they were checking on me but then again, they didn’t have to.

As Jace walked toward his motorcycle I called after him.

“You know I’m perfectly capable of surviving a workday.” I said and he looked back at me.

“I know.” He said.

“You all hovering because I’m the mechanic is becoming a little insulting.” I said and his expression

softened.

“We’re hovering because you’re our mechanic.” He said.

Before I could think of a sarcastic replay he started his motorcycle and rode away.

I watched until he disappeared around the corner and Ben looked up from the service bay with a

grin.

“I think they like you.” Ben said as I picked up a wrench.

“They like my labor rates.” I said.

tossed the clean shop rag at him and he caught it with a laugh.
