The damage looked worse in daylight. Y had spent most of the previous evening trying to convince myself that the vandalism was nothing more than another setback, but standing outside the new workshop the following morning made that harder to believe.

The excavator sat behind the temporary fencing with its damaged side panels exposed, while one smashed window had been covered with plastic to keep rain from getting inside.

The generator was useless, several construction materials had been ruined and the hydraulic lines on the excavator would need to be replaced before anyone could safely operate it. I folded my arms and stared at everything.

“This is going to delay us.” I said as Jace stood beside me.

“Probably.” He said.

“How long?” I asked.

“We’ll know after the insurance assessor gets here.” He said and I sighed.

“I don’t want to wait.” I said.

“I know.” He said.

“I’ve waited long enough.” I said as he looked at me.

“Then we won’t sit around waiting.” He said and I turned toward him.

“What are you thinking?” I asked.

“Replacement equipment.” He said.

“Jace, that’s expensive.” I said.

“So is letting the project sit here for two weeks.” He said and before I could argue, Derek walked over.

“I’ve already called around.” Derek said and I looked at him.

“For what?” I asked.

“Equipment.” He said and Jace nodded.

“Good.” Jace said and Derek handed him a piece of paper.

“There’s a company two towns over that can provide another excavator, a generator, and a small loaders Derek said.

“How soon?” Jace asked.

“Tomorrow morning.” He said and I stared at him.

“Tomorrow?” I asked and he nodded.

“They’ve got equipment available.” He said and I smiled.

How much?” I asked as Jace looked at the number.

“Enough.” He said and immediately shook my head.

“I don’t want the club paying for this.” I said

“I’m not asking.” Jace said.

“Jace.” I said.

“Paige.” He said.

He gave me the look that told me the argument was already over.

“I’m paying for the replacement equipment because I want your expansion moving again.” He said and I sighed.

“You’re impossible.” I said.

“I’ve been told.” He said and Derek smiled.

“I’ll arrange delivery.” Derek said.

The insurance assessor arrived less than an hour later, and I walked him through the damage while he took photographs and made notes.

He inspected the excavator first, then the generator, and finally the damaged materials.

“Do you know when this happened?” He asked.

“Overnight.” I said.

“Any idea who did it?” He asked and I shook my head.

“No.” I said and he looked toward the security cameras.

“Did they capture anything?” He asked.

“We’re checking.” I said and he nodded.

“I’ll need copies of the footage.” He said.

“You’ll have them.” I said.

He continued documenting everything, and although I knew the process was necessary, I hated watching time disappear while paperwork piled up. And when he finally finished, he closed his folder.

“I’ll submit the assessment today, and the claim should move quickly.” He said.

“How quickly?” I asked as he hesitated.

“That depends.” He said and I smiled politely.

“I was afraid you’d say that.” I said as he gave me an apologetic look.
