“Victor was questioned about a warehouse property, but the report says he refused to identify the person who had hired him.” Ethan said.

“Who hired him?” I asked.

“That’s the problem.” Ethan said as he turned the screen toward us.

“The name is redacted.” He added and Paige frowned.

“Can you recover it?” She asked as Ethan shook his head.

“Not from this copy.” Ethan said as I stared at the screen.

“Keep looking.” I said.

He opened another folder, and another, while the rest of us waited.

The clubhouse suddenly felt too small.

For months, we had been fighting something we thought we understood, but now the pieces were shifting around us and Paige leaned closer.

“What if Mr. Vale isn’t connected to the Black Reapers?” She asked and Derek looked at her.

“Then what is he connected to?” Derek asked.

“I don’t know.” She said.

She glanced toward the damaged phone sitting on the table.

“But Victor sounded like he was afraid of him.” She added as I nodded.

“That’s what concerns me.” I said as a phone buzzed on the table.

Everyone looked toward it and it was mine.

I picked it up and saw Sarah Collins’s name so I answered immediately.

“Sarah.” I said and her voice sounded serious.

“Jace, are you with Paige?” She asked.

“Yes.” I said.

“Is Charlotte there?” She asked.

“She’s upstairs.” I said.

“Good.” She said.

I stood and walked a few steps away from the others.

“What happened?” I asked.

Tve been going through what my department has on Victor and the Black Reapers.” She said and I waited.

There is something you need to know.” She added.

“What?” I asked.

“There is no Mr. Vale.” She said and I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

“You searched the Black Reapers?” I asked.

“We searched everything available to us.” She said.

“And?” I asked.

“We have Victor Kane, several associates, known businesses, properties, old reports, and informants.” She said and Sarah paused.

“But there is nobody called Mr. Vale.” She added and I looked across the clubhouse at Paige.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“I’m certain.” She said.

“What about older investigations?” I asked.

“I checked those too.” She said as her voice became quieter.

“Jace, police have never heard of Mr. Vale.” She added and my grip tightened around the phone.

“Then someone has been very careful.” I said.

“That is what worries me.” She said as I glanced toward Ethan.

He was still searching through the old records, while Paige watched him from across the room and Sarah continued.

“Whatever Charlotte recorded, protect it.” Sarah said.

“We are.” I said.

“And don’t assume Victor is the highest person involved.” She said as I stared at the floor.

“That was already my suspicion.” I said.

“Then trust your instincts.” She said and I nodded even though she could not see me.

“Thanks, Sarah.” I said.

“Call me if you find anything.” She said and the line went dead.

I lowered the phone slowly and Paige immediately stood.
