By eight in the morning, Lawson Customs was already full, and for the first time since the harbour, I allowed myself to believe that Victor had not managed to break us.

Motorcycles filled the parking lot, customers stood around the reception area, and the sound of engines echoed through the workshop as Ben, Alden, and the other mechanics moved from one job to another.

The phones had barely stopped ringing and every appointment slot for the next two weeks was booked.

I stood near the office doorway with my coffee in one hand while I watched the team work, and although exhaustion sat heavily behind my eyes, something warm settled in my chest.

This was my business. These were my people.

Victor could send men after us, plant trackers, manipulate employees, and turn our lives upside down, but Lawson Customs was still standing.

More importantly, everyone else was standing with it.

Ben walked past carrying a toolbox.

“Paige, the black Harley in bay three needs another inspection.” Ben said.

“I’ll check it after lunch.” I said.

“You said that about the last three bikes.” He said and I gave him a look.

“Are you telling the boss how to manage her schedule?” I asked and he grinned.

“I’m reminding the boss that she has employees now.” He said.

I shook my head, although I could not stop myself from smiling.

“You’re becoming very confident.” I said.

“You promoted me.” He said.

“I did.” I said.

“So technically, this is your fault.” He said and Aiden laughed from the next bay.

“Don’t encourage her to fire you.” Aiden said as Ben looked toward him.

“She won’t fire me.” Ben said as I raised my eyebrows.

“Would you like to test that theory?” I asked and he immediately returned to work.

“That sounds like a terrible idea.” Ben said.

I laughed quietly, and for a few seconds, everything felt normal.

Then I looked around the workshop again and I thought about Kyle.

The good feeling started to fade but I pushed it away.

Today was not going to belong to Kyle. It was not going to belong to Victor either.

I walked into the office and found Mia sorting invoices.

“Do you have a minute?” I asked and she looked up.

“Of course.” She said.

“I want to do something for everyone.” I said as her expression softened.

“Something good?” She asked.

“I think the staff would appreciate that.” She said.

“Can you order enough food for everyone?” I asked.

“How much food?” She asked as I looked toward the workshop.

“A ridiculous amount.” I said.

“That sounds more like you.” She said.

“I’ll take that as approval.” I said.

By lunchtime, the entire atmosphere had changed.

We moved tables behind the workshop, and Mia had arranged a barbecue with enough food to feed twice the number of people we had invited.

The employees gathered outside, while several customers who had been waiting for their motorcycles watched from nearby.
