Charlotte stood in front of me with her hands clasped together, and I could see how much

effort it was taking for her to ask the question.

“Can I help at the garage again?” She asked.

The words hung between us while the sounds of the clubhouse continued around us.

I looked at Jace but he didn’t answer for me, and he didn’t try, to influence my decision,

because he knew this was something I needed to decide for myself. So I looked back at

Charlotte.

“You can.” I said and her eyes widened.

“Really?” She asked.

“Yes, but there are conditions.” I said and she nodded immediately.

“Anything.” She said.

“You don’t work alone.” I said.

“I understand.” She said.

“You don’t have access to customer records unless Mia specifically gives you something to

handle.” I said.

“I understand.” She said.

“You don’t enter the workshop without one of us knowing where you are.” I said.

“Okay.” She said.

“And you don’t touch anything connected to the club’s investigations.” I said as Charlotte

nodded.

“I won’t.” She said and I studied her face.

“You understand that this isn’t forgiveness.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

“This is an opportunity.” I said.

“If you break my trust again, there won’t be another opportunity.” I said as her expression

tightened, but she nodded.

“I understand.” She said and Jace finally spoke.

“Then we’ll see what happens.” Jace said and Charlotte looked at him.

“Thank you.” Charlotte said and he gave her a small nod.

I wasn’t sure whether she deserved the chance. I wasn’t even sure whether I was giving it

because I trusted her or because I wanted to believe people could change.

Either way, I knew one thing. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice.

The following morning, Charlotte arrived at Lawson Customs before the doors opened.

Mia was already in the office when she walked through the front door.

“You’re early.” Mia said and Charlotte nodded.

“I didn’t want to be late.” Charlotte said and Mia looked toward me so I nodded.

Mia pointed toward the desk beside hers.

“You can start there.” Mia said and Charlotte sat down without complaint.

There was no dramatic announcement. There was no speech about redemption.

She simply started working.

She sorted invoices, organized customer folders, filed completed work orders, and cleaned

the office without being asked.

When Mia gave her a stack of paperwork, Charlotte worked through it carefully.

When she finished, she asked what else needed doing and Mia eventually looked at me.

“She is actually useful.” Mia said and I smiled.

“That sounded painful for you.” I said and Mia laughed.

“I’m trying to remain objective.” She said.

“You’re doing a terrible job.” I said.

“I know.” She said.
