Jace’s POV

The first call ended before the man could give me the location.

I stood beside the table with the phone still against my ear while Derek watched me.

“What did he say?” Derek asked.

“He says he is a Black Reaper, and he wants out.” I said.

“Out of the club?” Derek asked.

“Out of everything.” I said.

The phone rang again before I could say more.

Another unknown number so I answered.

“This is Jace.” I answered.

“I need protection.” He said and I exchanged a look with Derek.

“You’re also a Black Reaper?” I asked.

“Yes.” He said.

“And you know the other man who just called?” He asked and there was a pause.

“No.” He said which caught my attention.

“You’re calling me separately?” I asked.

“Yes.” He said.

“Why?” He said.

“Because we don’t trust anyone at the compound anymore.” He said as I leaned against the

table.

“Then tell me what you know.” I said.

“We can’t do this over the phone.” He said.

“Give me a location.” I said.

The man hesitated before giving me an address on the edge of town.

“Stay there.” I said.

“I need to know whether you will protect me.” He said.

“If you’re telling the truth, we will discuss protection when I have you somewhere secure.” I

said as the call ended.

“Two defectors.” Derek said.

“Two separate calls.” I said.

“You believe them?” He asked.

“I believe they’re scared.” I said.

“That isn’t the same thing.” He said.

“No, it isn’t.” I said and I looked toward the clubhouse doors.

“We’re going to find out.” I added.

Within twenty minutes, Derek had assembled Mason, Ethan, and two other Iron Vipers

members.

Paige was still at Lawson Customs, and I had no intention of involving her until we knew

exactly what we were dealing with.

We drove to the first location with enough distance between the bikes that anyone watching

would struggle to know whether we were traveling together.

The abandoned service station appeared ahead, and I slowed before turning into the parking

lot.

A man stood near the old fuel pumps wearing a Black Reapers vest, and his hands were

raised as Derek stopped beside me.

The man looked around nervously.

“Are you Jace?” He asked.

“Yes.” I said.

“My name is Cole.” He said.

“Where is the second man?” I asked.

“Because Victor is going to kill us.” Cole said.

“Why would he do that?” Derek asked as he stepped closer.

“Because he thinks someone is talking.” Cole said and I looked at the Black Reapers patch on

his vest.
