The night refused to end.

I kept telling myself that Jace was coming back, and I repeated it often enough that the words almost started sounding like certainty.

He was coming back. He had survived worse situations. He knew how to handle himself.

He would walk through those doors before sunrise and complain that everyone had worried

unnecessarily.

I wanted to believe every word.

Unfortunately, my phone remained silent.

I checked it again but nothing and I lowered it and returned to the motorcycle sitting on the lift.

Ben looked over from the other side of the workshop.

“You have checked your phone six times in the last ten minutes.” He said.

“I know.” I said.

“You should probably sit down.” He said.

“I’m working.” I said.

“You have been staring at that motorcycle for five minutes.” He said and I looked at the engine. He

was right.

“I’m thinking.” I said.

“You’re worrying.” He said.

“I can do both.” I said and Ben smiled faintly.

“I know.” He said.

I picked up a wrench and returned to the engine, because working gave my hands something to do

while my mind ran in circles.

The workshop remained open throughout the night, although the normal business had

disappeared completely.

Nobody was worried about customer repairs anymore.

We were repairing club motorcycles, checking damaged vehicles, helping businesses coordinate

transportation, and giving people somewhere safe to gather.

Mia continued answering phones from the office, and every few minutes, another call came through with information about roads, businesses, or members.

The Black Reapers had attacked several locations across town, but the Iron Vipers had managed to keep most of their people out of danger.

Most.

That word kept bothering me.

Derek was resting in the secured room with his shoulder stitched and bandaged, and Liam had

ordered him to remain there for several hours.

Derek had complained about it repeatedly but nobody cared.

He had been shot. He was staying put and around midnight, Emma arrived with Sophia and several

of the other wives.

They brought enough food to feed everyone who might come through the garage.

“You haven’t eaten.” Emma said.

“I’m not hungry.” I said.

“That wasn’t a question.” She said.

She placed a plate in front of me and I looked at it.

“Emma.” I said.

“Eat.” She said.

“I’m worried about Jace.” I said.

“So am I.” She said as she pulled a chair beside me.

“But you can’t help him by making yourself sick.” She said and I sighed and picked up the

sandwich.

“You sound like him.” I said.

“That’s because he’s usually right about things like this.” She said.

I took a bite and Emma smiled.

“There.” She said.

“You’re enjoying this.” I said.

“I’m enjoying seeing you eat.” She said and Sophia placed another tray on the workbench.

“We have enough food for everyone.” Sophia said.

“That’s good.” I said.

“We also have coffee.” She said and I looked at her.

“Now that’s useful.” I said and she laughed.
