Derek remained in the secured room, although he had finally stopped complaining and I stood near

the garage entrance with my arms folded.

The road outside was dark and I checked my phone again. Nothing.

I called Jace but there was no answer and my chest tightened.

I lowered the phone and then I heard an engine.

Diesel immediately lifted his head and I froze.

The sound grew louder and another motorcycle appeared at the end of the road. Then another.

I stepped forward and headlights approached the garage, and several Iron Vipers riders turned into the parking lot.

I searched the group and then I saw him.

Jace.

He looked exhausted. His clothes were dirty, his hair was disheveled, and there was dried blood on

one sleeve, although I could not tell whether it was his.

He removed his helmet and stepped off the motorcycle.

For a second, neither of us moved. Then I crossed the distance between us.

“I know.” He said.

“You scared me.” I said.

“I know.” He said and I pulled back enough to look at him.

“Do you have any idea how many times I called you?” I asked and he looked tired enough to

collapse.

“Too many.” He said.

“That’s not funny.” I said.

“I was trying to make you smile.” He said.

“It didn’t work.” I said but he smiled anyway.

“I’m sorry.” He said as I touched his face.

“Are you hurt?” I asked.

“No.” He said.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“Yes.” He said and I looked him over again.

“You’re covered in blood.” I said.

“Not mine.” He said and I exhaled slowly.

“Thank God.” I said and Jace rested his forehead against mine.

“It was a long night.” He said.

“I thought something had happened.” I said.

“Something did happen.” He said and my stomach tightened.

“We found several Black Reaper teams moving between the attacks.” He said.

“Victor?” I asked.

“He wasn’t there.” He said.

“Then where is he?” I asked but Jace shook his head.

“We don’t know.” He said and I hated that answer so he looked toward the garage.

“Everyone okay?” He asked.

“Derek was shot.” I said as Jace immediately straightened.

“What?” He asked.

“He’s alive, and Liam removed the bullet.” I said.

“Where is he?” Jace asked.

“Secured room.” I said as Jace started toward the garage.

“He needs to rest.” I added.

“I will see him.” Jace said and we walked inside together and Derek looked up when Jace entered.

“Nice of you to finally show up.” Derek said as Jace stared at him.

“You got shot.” Jace said.

“Apparently.” Derek said.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?” Jace asked.

“Because you were busy disappearing.” Derek said as Jace shook his head.

“You two are impossible.” Jace said and I smiled despite everything.

For the first time all night, the pressure in my chest began to ease.

Jace was home. He was alive and the club was still standing.

The families were safe and for a few minutes, that was enough.
