CHAPTER 230-1

e abandoned factory looked even worse in person.

Its windows were broken, weeds had pushed through cracks in the concrete, and rust covered the

old loading doors.

From the road, it looked like a building that had been forgotten years ago.

According to Tyler, it was anything but forgotten.

I stood beside Derek and Mason while Ethan studied the building through binoculars.

“How many?” I asked.

“Six visible. There could be more inside.” Ethan replied.

“Any vehicles?” I asked.

“Two motorcycles behind the western wall.” He said and Derek looked at me.

“That confirms Tyler’s information.” Derek said and I nodded.

“Keep everyone quiet.” I said.

We moved toward the factory from three directions, and nobody rushed the building because we

had no intention of giving anyone inside a reason to start shooting.

The first door opened before we reached it and a Black Reaper rider stepped outside with his hands raised.

“I don’t want trouble.” He said and Derek approached him.

“Then keep your hands where we can see them.” Derek said as the rider nodded. Then two more men followed. Then another.

Within seconds, several Black Reapers were standing outside the factory with their hands raised and I stepped closer.

I

“Where is Damien?” I asked but nobody answered and I looked at the oldest man.

“He was here.” I asked.

“He left.” He said.

“When?” I asked.

“About twenty minutes ago.” He said and I exchanged a look with Derek.

Damien had escaped again.

Qf course he had.

“Where did he go?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” He said.

I believed him. The fear in his face was too obvious to fake.

“Everyone inside stays where they are. Nobody reaches for a weapon, and nobody makes a stupid decision.” I said and the men nodded.

We searched them carefully before moving farther into the factory.

The interior smelled like oil, dust, and old concrete.

Several rooms had been cleared recently, but others contained equipment and crates.

Ethan opened the first crate.

“Jace.” Ethan said and I walked over.

Inside were firearms. Lots of them.

“Illegal weapons.” Ethan said.

“Document everything.” I said and he nodded.

We continued deeper into the building. The next room contained motorcycles. Some were stripped for parts. Others were almost complete and Derek walked toward one and stopped.

“This was reported stolen last month.” Derek said as Mason looked at the others.

“How many?” Mason asked as Ethan counted.

“Eight.” Ethan said and I looked around the room.

“Photograph every one.” I said.

“We will.” He said.

The factory was becoming another piece of evidence. That was exactly what I wanted.

No unnecessary firefight. No bodies. No destruction.

Just evidence.

We searched the main floor for the underground entrance Tyler had mentioned.

But nothing appeared obvious.

Then Mason found a section of concrete flooring that looked newer than the surrounding surface.

“This looks wrong.” Mason said and Ethan crouched beside it.

“There is a seam.” Ethan said as Derek moved closer.

“Could be a maintenance hatch.” Derek said and I looked around.

“Open it.” I said.
