ou did the right thing by telling us.” I said and Charlotte looked surprised.
“I almost kept it to myself.” She said.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because every time I give you information, I wonder whether you believe me.” She said and I leaned back slightly.
“That’s because you gave me plenty of reasons not to trust you.” I said as Charlotte lowered her
eyes.
“I know.” She said.
There was no argument. No excuse. No attempt to make herself the victim.
She simply accepted the truth, and somehow that made the words harder to say.
Sarah finished her call.
“I am sending officers to the Briarwood location now, and I will take everything you have provided.”
Sarah said.
Ethan handed her copies of the relevant records.
“If Keeler is still operating, these should give you enough to start pulling the financial trail.” Ethan
said and Sarah nodded.
“They might give us more than that.” Sarah said as Charlotte looked toward the papers.
“Then I hope you find him.” Charlotte said as Sarah studied her for a moment.
“So do I.” Sarah said.
Sarah left the office, and the door closed behind her and Jace watched it for several seconds.
“She knew about Briarwood.” Jace said and I looked at him.
“Yes.” I said.
“She knew about the underground facility too.” Jace said.
“I know.” I said.
“And every time she says she has a source, she refuses to tell us who it is.” Jace said.
I understood his concern because I shared part of it.

“We need to know how much Sarah knows.” I said and Jace nodded.
“We will.” He said as he looked toward Charlotte.
“You helped us today.”, Jace said and Charlotte gave a small nod.
“I wanted to.” Charlotte said.
Jace studied her for another moment before stepping away from the doorway.
“I believe you.” Jace said as Charlotte’s eyes widened slightly.
Jace rarely gave trust away freely, and I could tell his words meant something to her.
He left the office to check on Ethan and Charlotte remained seated.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke. Then she looked at me.
“Do you think I’m actually helping?” She asked and the question caught me off guard.
“You are.” I said and Charlotte swallowed.
“I keep expecting you to tell me that I should leave.” She said.
“I considered it.” I said.
“I know.” She said.
“But you stayed.” I said and Charlotte gave a faint smile.
“You gave me the chance to stay.” She said.
“I did.” I said.
“And I know I don’t deserve it yet.” She said.
I looked down at the documents scattered across the desk.
Maybe she was right. Trust wasn’t something that appeared because someone apologized, and forgiveness wasn’t something that could be demanded because enough time had passed.
Charlotte had hurt me. She had manipulated people. She had helped Victor. She had made choices that had nearly destroyed my life.
Nothing about that disappeared because she had started making better choices.
However, today she had willingly given us information that could help dismantle another part of
the network.
She hadn’t asked for anything in return. She hadn’t demanded recognition. She had simply told the
