don’t expect you to forgive me.” She said.

“I’m not there yet.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

“But I can acknowledge when you do something good.” I said and Charlotte looked at me again

“That means more than you know.” She said and I stood and walked around the desk.

For a second, I considered whether I should hug her.

We had never been that kind of sisters.

Too much history stood between us, and too many wounds were still open.

Instead, I placed my hand gently on her shoulder and Charlotte covered my hand with hers.

“I’m trying.” She whispered.

“I can see that.” I said and she nodded, and a tear slipped down her cheek.

“I want to keep trying.” She said.

“You should.” I said.

The moment lasted only a few seconds, but it felt like something had shifted.

Not everything. Not even most things.

However, something had moved. Something small. Something real.

Neither of us noticed the figure standing outside the office.

Charles Lawson had arrived at the garage several minutes earlier, and he had stopped when he

saw the two of us through the open doorway.

He didn’t interrupt. He simply watched and I pulled my hand away from Charlotte’s shoulder and returned to the desk, while Charlotte wiped her face and tried to regain her composure.

Charles remained completely still and his eyes moved from Charlotte to me.

Then he looked at the documents spread across the desk, and finally back at his daughters.

For years, he had watched us become strangers.

He had believed Charlotte when she lied, dismissed me when she needed him, and allowed the

distance between his daughters to grow until there was almost nothing left.

Now he was watching the first genuine moment of forgiveness begin.

Charlotte noticed him first and her face drained of color.

“Dad.” She said and I turned as Charles stood in the doorway.

He looked at Charlotte, then at me, and something in his expression made my stomach tighten

and he had tears in his eyes.

“I heard what you said.” He whispered and Charlotte looked away as Charles stepped/into the

office.

“I never thought I would hear those words between you two.” He said.

I didn’t know what to say. Neither did Charlotte and Charles looked at me.

“You thanked her.” Charles said and I nodded.

“She helped us.” I said and Charles swallowed hard.

“I should have helped both of you a long time ago.” He said and the room fell silent.

Then Charles looked toward Charlotte, and his voice dropped.

“Maybe I finally have a chance to do one good thing too.” Charles said and Charlotte stared at him.

Before either of us could answer, Charles placed a folder on my desk.

“There is something inside that I think you need to see.” He said and I frowned.

“What is it?” I asked as Charles looked toward the closed office door.

“Something I found among your mother’s things.” He said and his expression changed.

“It has Michael Reeves’ name on it.” He added and my heart stopped.

And suddenly, the fragile peace between my sister and me was standing beside a new mystery

that could change everything.

almost cancelled dinner three times.

The first time was when Charles called and asked if Jace and I could come over.

The second time was when he added Victoria and Charlotte to the invitation.

The third time was when I realized I had no idea what dinner with my entire family was supposed

to feel like anymore.

Jace found me standing in the workshop after closing, staring at my phone.
