Nalmost cancelled dinner three times.

The first time was when Charles called and asked if Jace and I could come over.

The second time was when he added Victoria and Charlotte to the invitation.

The third time was when I realized I had no idea what dinner with my entire family was supposed to feel like anymore.

Jace found me standing in the workshop after closing, staring at my phone.

“You are thinking too loudly.” He said and I looked at him.

“How can you tell?” I asked.

“You have that look.” He said.

“What look?” I asked.

“The one where you are planning twelve different ways to escape a situation.” He said and I smiled despite myself.

“Charles invited everyone to dinner.” I said.

“I know.” He said.

“You sound very calm about that.” I said.

“I’m trying to be supportive.” He said.

“You’re failing.” I said and he laughed and stepped closer.

“Do you want to go?” He asked.

I looked toward the office where Charlotte had been working earlier.

“Yes.” I said and the answer surprised me.

“I think I do.” I added so Jace nodded.

“Then we go.” Jace said.

“What if it turns into another disaster?” I asked.

“Then we leave.” He said and I smiled.

“That simple?” I asked.

“That simple.” He said.

So, two hours later, we pulled into my parents’ driveway.

The house looked exactly as I remembered it, although it felt different now.

Maybe the house hadn’t changed. Maybe I had.

Jace reached across the center console and took my hand.

“You ready?” He asked.

“No.” I said and he smiled.

“Good, because neither am I.” He said and I laughed as we got out.

Charles opened the front door before we reached it.

“Come in.” Charles said.

His voice sounded nervous. That alone told me this dinner mattered to him.

Victoria stood in the dining room, while Charlotte was setting plates on the table.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke and then Victoria smiled.

“I’m glad you came.” Victoria said.

“Me too.” I said and Charlotte looked at me.

“I saved you a seat.” Charlotte said and I looked at the chair beside her.

“Thanks.” I said and Jace sat on the other side of me.

It was such a small thing, but it felt strangely important.

Jace placed a hand against my back as we walked inside.

Dinner started awkwardly and nobody seemed to know what subject was safe.

Charlotte asked whether Ethan had found anything else in the ledgers and I explained that the investigation was still moving.

Then we reached another silence and Jace looked around the table.

“I think we’re all avoiding the obvious.” Jace said and Charles gave a nervous laugh.

“What would that be?” Charles asked.
