CHAPTER 233-3

es.” I said.

She stood and walked around the table, wrapping her arms around me and I froze for half a second before hugging her back.

“I am happy for you.” She whispered as Charles stood next.

He looked at Jace before holding out his hand.

“Welcome to the family.” Charles said and Jace shook it.

“I’ve been trying to earn that for a while.” Jace said and Charles smiled.

“You have.” Charles said.

Charlotte hugged me next, and this time I did not hesitate.

“I’m happy for you.” She whispered.

“Thank you.” I said and she pulled back.

“I wish I had been a better sister before this.” She said and I looked at her.

“You can’t change that.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

“But you can change what happens next.” I said and she nodded.

“That’s what I’m trying to do.” She said.

Dinner continued after that, and somehow it became easier.

We talked about the wedding.

We laughed about Derek’s terrible jokes during the ceremony and Victoria wanted to see photographs.

Charles wanted to know whether Jace had actually planned anything romantic.

Jace admitted that most of the planning had been done under pressure and I defended him.

“He did fine.” I said as Jace looked at me.

“Fine?” Jace asked.

“You married me.” I said.

“That’s true.” He said.

“So you can’t complain.” I said and he smiled.

“I would marry you again.” He said as the words settled warmly inside me.

Later, dessert appeared, and I realized I had stopped watching the clock.

I had stopped waiting for someone to ruin the evening.

Maybe that was what healing looked like. It didn’t erase the damage. It didn’t suddenly make

everything perfect.

It simply gave us one evening where nobody added another wound.

I looked around the table.

My mother was laughing. My father was listening. Charlotte was smiling and Jace was beside me

For the first time in a very long time, I didn’t feel like I was sitting outside my own family looking in.

I felt like I belonged and then Jace’s phone rang.

His smile disappeared almost immediately and everyone noticed.

He looked at the screen and the name made his expression change.

“Who is it?” I asked as Jace stood.

“I don’t know yet. Excuse me.” He said as he walked away from the table and answered.

“Jace speaking.” He answered as I watched him in the next room.

His shoulders stiffened and he said nothing for several seconds. Then his eyes found mine.

Whatever he had heard had changed everything.

“What happened?” I asked as Jace lowered the phone slightly.

“Paige, we need to go.” Jace said and my stomach tightened.

“Why?” I asked.
