“Victor.” He said.

“That’s not enough.” I said.

“I know where he’s hiding.” He said and I studied him.

“Where?” I asked.

“Not yet.” He said and my jaw tightened.

“You’re already bargaining.” I said.

“I need to know I have a way out first.” He said.

“You won’t get a free pass.” I said.

“I’m not asking for one.” He said.

“What are you asking for?” I asked.

“A vehicle, enough fuel to leave the county, and a guarantee that your people will not follow me.”

He said as I stared at him.

“That’s a lot.” I said.

“It’s less than you would spend finding Victor without me.” He said and he had a point but that

didn’t mean I trusted him.

“Tell me where.” I said and Damien took a slow breath.

“An old quarry outside county lines.” Damien said and I waited.

“Victor has been using a maintenance bunker beneath the quarry.” He added.

“Who else knows?” I asked.

“Almost nobody.” He said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because Victor found it years ago.” He said and I frowned.

“Before the Black Reapers?” I asked and Damien nodded.

“Who?” I asked.

else.” He added.

“Records about what?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” He said.

“Then what makes you think they matter?” I asked.

“Because Victor nearly killed a man for asking about them.” He said as I studied him.

“Charles Black?” I asked and Damien’s expression changed.

“You know that name.” Damien asked.

“Yes.” I said and Damien looked toward the ground.

“Victor knew it too.” Damien said and my stomach tightened.

“What else?” I asked.

“There was a symbol.” He said and I felt the pieces connecting.

“The same symbol?” I asked and Damien nodded.

“The one you found in the factory.” Damien said as Ethan stepped from the trees and Damien

looked at him.

“You weren’t alone.” Damien said.

“No.” I said and Ethan walked closer.

“Keep talking.” Ethan said as Damien gave him a tired look.

“Victor kept one room locked inside the bunker.” Damien said.

“What was inside?” Ethan asked.

“I never saw.” Damien said.

“You expect us to believe that?” Ethan asked.

“I expect you to understand that Victor didn’t trust anyone.” Damien said and I stepped closer.
