The few hours I managed to get disappeared quickly, and when I opened my eyes before sunrise, Paige was already awake beside me.

She was lying on her side, watching me.

“You’re awake.” She whispered.

“So are you.” I said.

“I couldn’t sleep.” She said.

“Neither could I.” I said but neither of us smiled.

We both knew what today meant.

I reached for her hand, and she intertwined her fingers with mine.

“We should get ready.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

We climbed out of bed together, and the president’s apartment remained unusually quiet as we moved through our morning routine.

There was no music. There was no television. There were no phones ringing.

There was only the sound of the shower running and the quiet movement of two people who knew they were about to walk into something that could change everything.

After showering, I dressed in black jeans, boots, and my club vest.

Paige stood in front of me while she adjusted the collar and she ran her fingers over the patch on

my chest.

“You always look serious when you wear this.” She said.

“I am serious.” I said.

“I know.” She said as she straightened the vest.

“You’re still coming home.” She said.

“I am.” I said.

“You had better.” She said and I wrapped my arms around her.

“I plan on making you regret how much you missed me.” I said and she smiled faintly.

“That sounds like a promise.” She said.

“It is.” I said.

We walked downstairs together and the clubhouse was dark, so Paige was making the coffee that she had started before I came downstairs.

She had already prepared breakfast.

Nothing complicated, just eggs, toast, bacon, and coffee and we sat at the small table near the

window.

For several minutes, neither of us said anything.

I watched Paige drink her coffee and she watched me eat.

Neither of us wanted to say what was sitting between us.

Finally, I reached across the table.

“Whatever happens today, I need you to stay at the garage.” I said.

“I will.” She said.

“Stay with Emma and Sophia.” I said.

“I will.” She said.

“Keep the doors secured.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

“If something happens, you leave immediately.” I said and Paige’s eyes hardened.

“Nothing is happening to me.” She said.

“I know.” I said.

“You don’t sound like you know.” She said.

“I’m trying to make sure you’re safe.” I said.

“I understand.” She said.

She reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

“And I need you to remember that you have somewhere to come back to.” She said and I nodded.

“I remember.” I said.

When breakfast was finished, we walked outside and Paige insisted on taking my bike to the

garage.

My motorcycle was waiting beneath the security lights and Paige walked around it slowly.

She checked the tires. Then the brakes. Then the fuel. She checked the chain and inspected the
