CHAPTER 245-1

stood outside Lawson Customs for several minutes, staring down the road where Charlotte’s car had disappeared.

The celebration continued behind me, but I barely heard it anymore.

Something was wrong. I didn’t know what it was, and that uncertainty bothered me more than

wanted to admit.

Jace was still inside with everyone else, and for a moment, I thought about telling him everything.

The baby. The property. Charlotte leaving but there were too many things I had been holding

inside.

My hand drifted toward my stomach.

I had promised myself I would tell Jace as soon as he came home.

He was home now and I should have been running toward him with the news.

Instead, I was standing outside the garage wondering where my sister had gone.

I took out my phone but Charlotte didn’t answer.

I called again but there was nothing and I looked toward the road.

Then I made my decision.

I would tell Jace about the baby later. Right now, I needed to find Charlotte.

I grabbed my keys and headed toward my truck and Emma noticed me leaving.

“Where are you going?” She asked.

“I need to find Charlotte.” I said and her expression changed.

“Do you want someone to come with you?” She asked but I shook my head.

“No, I think I need to do this myself.” I said and Emma nodded.

“Call if you need anything.” She said.

“I will.” I said and I climbed into the truck and drove.

There was only one place I could think of where Charlotte might go.

Uncle Will’s grave.

Will had been the one person in our family who had always treated me like I mattered. He had also

been one of the few people Charlotte had respected.

When I reached the cemetery, the sun was beginning to lower behind the trees.

I parked near the entrance and walked toward the older section and I found her before I reached

the grave.

Charlotte was sitting on the grass beside Uncle Will’s headstorie:

She had her knees pulled toward her chest, and her arms were wrapped around them.

For several seconds, I simply watched her and then I walked closer.

“You disappeared.” I said as Charlotte looked up and her eyes were red.

“I knew you would find me.” She said.

“I know you.” I said and she gave a small, sad smile.

“I’m sorry.” She said as I sat beside her.

“You keep saying that.” I said.

“I know.” She said.

“And I keep telling you that you don’t have to apologize every five minutes.” I said.

“I know that too.” She said and she looked toward Uncle Will’s headstone.

“I just don’t know what else to say.” I said.

“You could tell me why you left.” She said and Charlotte took a slow breath.

“Because I saw you with Dad.” She said and I looked at her.

“You were happy.” She added.

“I was.” I said.

“You hugged him.” She said.

“Yes.” I said.

“I realized something.” She said.

“What?” I asked as Charlotte looked down at her hands.

“I was jealous.” She said and I frowned.

“Of Dad?” I asked.
