lamed Ben. It wasn’t fair. It also wasn’t entirely inaccurate.
Every time I walked past the workbench where we’d almost kissed the night before, I pictured the roller door flying open and Ben standing there with the expression of a man who wished he’d accidentally left himself somewhere else instead of his phone.
By the time I finished making coffee upstairs, I’d replayed the moment at least twenty times.
Each version ended exactly the same way. Interrupted.
I showered, brushed my teeth and tied my hair up before getting dressed and I headed downstairs
with my coffee.
Mia arrived a few minutes later carrying a folder tucked beneath one arm.
“Morning.” She said.
“Morning.” I said and she studied me for a second.
“You look tired.” She said.
“I slept.” I said.
“That’s not what I asked.” She said and I smiled innocently.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I said and she laughed quietly.
“I’ll ask Ben instead.” She said.
“You leave Ben out of this.” I said.
“So there is a this.” She said and I pointed toward the office.
“You’ve become dangerously observant.” I said.
“I answer phones all day. And I hear everything.” She said.
Before I could think of a reply, Ben walked through the front door carrying a paper bag from the
bakery.
The moment our eyes met, he suddenly became fascinated by the floor.
“Morning.” He muttered.
“Morning.” I said looking away and he placed the bag on the counter without looking at me.
“I brought donuts.” He said.

“Bribery?” I asked and he looked genuinely surprised.
“What?” He asked.

“You’re being unusually polite for someone who walked into an awkward moment.” I said and his
ear immediately turned bright red.
“I said I forgot about that.” He said.
“You said you’d try.” I said.
“I’ve been trying very hard.” He said and Mia looked between us.
“What exactly happened?” Mia asked and Ben pointed dramatically toward the workshop.
“I’ve got filters to organize.” Ben said.
“You hate organizing filters.” Mia said.
“I suddenly love it.” Ben said and he disappeared before Mia could ask another question so she looked back at me with one eyebrow raised.
“I’m guessing I’ll find out eventually.” Mia said.
“Probably.” I said.
The morning quickly became busy enough to push everything else aside.
Motorcycles rolled into the service bays one after another, customers collected finished repairs and Mia somehow managed to reorganize the next two weeks of books after three emergency
remairs arrived before lunch.
Just after eleven, a familiar motorcycle rumbled into the parking lot.
Obviously I didn’t need to look. I already knew and Jace walked through the roller door carrying two takeaway cups while Hunter’s voice echoed from outside.
“Tell her they’re both for you.” Hunter yelled.
“They’re not.” Jace called back and I accepted one of the cups with a smile.
“You’ve developed excellent timing.” I said.
“I’ve been told.” He said.
“You’ve also developed an expensive coffee habit.” I said.
“I know a mechanic who seems to appreciate it.” He said.
“I suppose I can tolerate it.” I said.
