For a moment the sounds of the workshop seemed to disappear. Customers still wandered through the office, Ben was somewhere in the second service bay and Mia answered another phone call. None of it reached me.

I looked at the coffee cup warming my hand before meeting Jace’s eyes again.

“I’ve been pretending too.” I said and a small smile touched the corner of his mouth.

“I thought you might’ve been.” He said.

“I kept telling myself getting involved with the president of a motorcycle club was a terrible idea. I

said.

“It probably is.” He said.

“I also kept reminding myself that you drink far too much coffee.” I said.

“I do.” He said.

“And you keep bringing more motorcycles to my garage.” I said.

“I definitely do.” He said and I shook my head with a quiet laugh.

“I had an entire list of reasons why this shouldn’t happen.” I said.

“What happened to the list?” He asked and I looked around the garage.

Ben was humming while he worked, the garage my uncle had trusted me to protect was going stong and I looked back at Jace.

“It stopped making sense.” I said and his expression softened.

“I like you, Paige.” He asid.

There wasn’t anything dramatic about the way he said it. No rehearsed speech, not grand

declaration. Just simple honesty.

“I’ve liked you for a while. I know your garage comes first and I know your family situation is complicated and I know you’ve got every reason in the world to be careful. But I’m done pretending I’m only coming here because the bikes need work.” He said and I couldn’t stop smiling.

“I knew you were breaking them.” I said and he laughed.

“I promise we weren’t.” He sid.

“I’m still not completely convinced.” I said and his head tilted slighty.

“So?” He asked.

“So what?” I asked.

“So are you going to keep pretending you don’t like me?” He asked and I sighed dramatically.

“I was hoping you’d forgotten to ask that part.” I said.

“I didn’t.” He said.

“I noticed…I like you too.” I said.

The words felt strangely easy once they were finally spoken.

“I’ve been trying not to. I kept telling myself this was supposed to stay professional. I kept finding new excuses. But you brought me coffee and you listened instead of trying to fix everything. You waited when I wasn’t ready to talk and somewhere along the way…you became the person I looked forward to seeing every day.” I said.

Neither of us spoke after that. There wasn’t much left to stay.

The distance between us disappeared naturally as his hand gently brushed against mine before carefully intertwining our fingers and he gave me every opportunity to step away. But I didn’t.

Instead, I closed the last few inches between us.

The kiss was soft and unhurried.

Everything I’d expected it to be after weeks of almosts, interruptions and stolen moments.

When we finally pulled apart, I laughed quietly.

“Ben is going to be furious.” I said.

“Why?” Jace asked.

“Because he missed the sequel.” I said.

Before either of us could say another work an explosion of cheering erupted from outside the

workshop.

I jumped so hard I nearly dropped my coffee and Hunter leaned through the open roller door clapping loudly above his head.

“I told you it would happen this week.” Hunter said and Derek pointed a finger at Mason.

“You own me twenty bucks.” Derek said.

“I said Friday.” Mason said.

CHAPTER 30-2

“You underestimated them.” Derek said.

Emma laughed so hard she had to lean against one of the motorcycles.

“I’ve been waiting months for this.” Emma said.

I stared at the crowd gathered outside. Half the Iron Vipers were standing in the parking lot and

several wives stood beside them wearing enormous smiles.

Even George had wandered over from across the street and was trying very hard to hide his grin

behind his coffee cup.

“You were all watching?” I asked and Hunter shrugged without a trace of guilt.

“We weren’t watching.” Hunter said.

“You absolutely were.” I said.

“We were…observing.” He said.

“That’s watching.” I said.

“I prefer my word.” He said.

I grabbed the nearest rag from the bench and I threw it toward him.

It bounced off is shoulder harmlessly but Hunter clutched his chest dramatically.

“I’ve been assaulted.” He said.

“You’ll survive.” I said.

“I’ve got witnesses.” He said.

“They’re all laughing at you.” I said and Derek nodded.
