Saturday morning usually started with the sound of motorbikes pulling into Lawson Customs
before I’d even finished my first coffee.
By nine o’clock the workshop was already busy, Ben was working through a routine service. Mia was juggling phone calls and invoices with her usual impossible level of organization and I was
halfway through replacing a clutch assembly on an old Harley.
It was shaping up to be another ordinary day but unfortunately, ordinary days never seemed to last
very long anymore.
A sleek black luxury sedan rolled into the parking lot followed closely by another vehicle.
I frowned as the first car stopped near the office.
The driver’s door opened and Charles Lawson stepped out wearing an expensive tailored suit that looked completely out of place beside oil stains and motorcycle lifts.
The second vehicle parked behind him and three well dressed men climbed out carrying leather
folders and measuring equipment. Real estate agent.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me.” I sighed and Ben looked up from his workbench.
“Everything alright?” He asked.
“My father’s here.” I said and Ben followed my gaze toward the parking lot.
“I take it this isn’t a social visit.” He said.
“If he starts being friendly, check whether hell froze over.” I said.
Mia stepped out of the office just as Charles adjusted his jacket and walked confidently toward the
workshop.
The agents followed several steps behind him already looking around the property with
professional interest.
“Good morning, Paige.” Charles smiled as though he owned the place and I set my wrench onto the
toolbox.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“I thought we’d have another conversation.” He said.
“I thought we already had one.” I said.

He ignored the comment and gestured toward the garage.
“This property has tremendous value.” Charles said.
“Sentiment doesn’t build wealth.” I said.
“It built this garage.” Charles said.
The three agents exchanged uncomfortable glanced but remained silence and Charles turned
toward them.
“As you can see, the building occupies a prime commercial location.” Charles said and one of the agents opened a folder.
“The site could easily accommodate a retail development.” The agent said.
“It already accommodates a successful motorcycle workshop.” I snapped and Charles looked
back at me.
“You are wasting this land.” He said.
“I’m using it exactly the way Uncle Will wanted.” I said.
“He’s gone.” Charles said.
The words landed harder than he probably intended and I took a slow breath before answering.
“The garage isn’t.” I said.
Customers had quietly stopped what they were doing. Several people stood near the service bays pretending to examine motorcycles while listening to every word.
Charles either didn’t notice or simply didn’t care.
“You could sell this property today and never work another day in your life.”Charles said and I smiled without any warmth.
“You keep saying that like it’s a compliment.” I said.
“It is.” He said.
“No. It’s an insult.” I said shaking my head.
“Excuse me?” He asked.
“You think success means never getting your hands dirty. I happen to like getting my hands dirty.” I said and I held up my grease stained fingers.
“You are better than this.” Charles said.
