Dark Room… All Over Again

ARABELLA’S POV

Alexei’s bitterness finally made sense.

He wanted to be his son.

“Your position?” I scoffed, folding my arms. “Not to be biased, but your father would make a terrible Pakhan I mumed.

Alvise’s eyes flashed with something unrecognizable, the blue in them shining so brightly it almost blinded me.

“Ah, I see. So tell me,” he muttered, raising a brow. “What does it take to be a good Pakhan?”

I opened my mouth, closed it, and then, when I realized I literally had no idea, I sighed. “Well, I don’t know,” chuckled, touching his abs. “But he certainly can’t do it the way you do.”

Alvise tensed beneath my touch. “I know,” he said smugly, leaning down to press his lips to my forehead. “No one does it quite like me.”

I gasped, craning my head back to look at him. “Pride goes before a fall, Mr Valerio.”

Undoing his buttons, Alvise turned around and headed for the bathroom. “And I’d drag you right down with me, Mrs. Valerio.”

A stupid blush stained my cheeks, and I bit my lip, shaking my head.

It was crazy, really, that what had me grinning like an idiot was a conversation between Alvise and me about his very illegal position as the head of a criminal organization.

I was doomed.

Slowly, my eyes fluttered open, and I blinked rapidly, trying to locate any source of the light in the room.

It was dark.

Pitch black.

I sat up on the bed, running my hands through my hair and stifling a yawn.

After Alvise had entered the bathroom to take a shower, I’d sat on the bed with the full intention of waiting for him, but obviously, I’d ended up falling asleep.

“Why’s the room so dark?” I mumbled under my breath.

“Probably because it’s past midnight.”

I jumped, my heart nearly lurching out of my chest as the deep voice filled the room.

“Alvise…” I clutched my chest, heaving a sigh of relief. “You scared me… Where are you?”

I knew he was close, but I just didn’t know where.

And while I couldn’t see him, I knew for sure that he could see me.

“And why the hell do you like staying in unusually dark rooms?” I hissed, looking around. “You could have at least left a lamp

on.”

didn’t respond.

I pressed my lips together, my heartbeat turning irregular. “Alvise?”

“Why did you come into my room that night?”

I froze, a knot forming in my stomach as his question, delivered in the coldest tone yet, hung in the air.

Of course, I knew the night he was talking about.

I cleared my throat. “Why… are we talking about that?”

“Because I want to, baby.”

“But it’s the middle of the night.”

“Right around the same time you showed up,” he rasped.

I twisted my fingers together, leaning against the headboard to steady myself as my body began to tremble.

I hated the reaction.

But I couldn’t pretend I didn’t know why.

Alvise and I were no longer strangers… at least, not entirely. We’d grown considerably closer, and dare I say, things were different compared to how they had been years ago.

However, that didn’t mean I’d forgotten how things once were.

“Back then,” I whispered, hoping he couldn’t hear me. “I found you scary,” I breathed. “I still do… sometimes.” I chuckled lightly. “But back then, it was worse. You were like a puzzle I couldn’t solve. Cold, intimidating, and utterly out of place… You stuck out, and that stuck with me… pun intended.”

I was trying to lighten the mood because, somehow, it felt as though I were back in his apartment again, nervous and uncertain, with no idea what to expect from him.

“You were like the perfect definition of everything my parents didn’t want for me.” I licked my lips, a frown settling on my face at the thought of my parents. “And maybe that’s why I liked you so much.”

“Liked?” Alvise muttered, his deep, cool voice sending shivers down my spine. “You liked me?”

I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn’t see me. “I’ve mentioned this before.”

“I assumed you were lying.”

“Please,” I scoffed. “It was pretty obvious. Well, not really, since I hid it quite well, but after I sneaked into your apartment, didn’t you get the hint? What did you think I came there for…?”

“To get laid,” Alvise said nonchalantly, without the slightest hesitation.

I yelped. “Excuse you…” I pressed my palm against my lips, heat rising to my cheeks. “Why are you so… blunt?”

“I say things as they are,” he mumbled. “And by the way, isn’t that why you came…?”

“Of course not!”

“Well, it’s hard to take your word for it or think anything else when you basically ran off before I could wake up!”

My heart sank to my stomach. “Alvise… but you already know why…”

alled you,” he said, a hint of something dark creeping into his voice. “Several times.”

My fingers shook, my nails clashing against each other as I tried to rub my hands together. “I’m sorry…”
